Fracking is a method of extracting oil and natural gas from deep underground. Some say it is safe and an asset to the U.S. economy while others argue it has the potential to contaminate ground water and harm communities by causing extensive health issues and decreasing property values.

The Humboldt County Sheriff's Office welcomed D.A.R.E. officers from across the state this week to Winnemucca for the annual D.A.R.E. conference. Each year, a different city hosts the state conference. Officers and deputies come from across Nevada to gain valuable knowledge to take back to their agencies and into the schools they teach at.

Strategic metals were in such short supply during World War II, that processing plants for these metals sprang up in unlikely places. This is one of them. Winnemucca Mountain had gold mines from the 1860s, several of them, but no tungsten deposits. Winnemucca Mines Co. had a tungsten mine near Imlay, the Star Mine, and a mill site on Winnemucca Mountain. They built their mill and concentrating plant on Winnemucca Mountain and hauled ore the thirty plus miles from the Star mine to the mill. Only during the extreme demands of the war years was the plant able to work tungsten profitably. They ceased tungsten production there by the mid forties. After the war the mill operated for a few more years milling gold ore until increasing production costs and gold's federally regulated price closed it down.
The theme of the May Alzheimer's conference in Reno was "Living Well with Dementia". Presenters throughout the day focused on this thought: life is of value and worth living, even when the mind of the individual is not as active and engaged as it was in the past. While I agree that in the early to mid-stages of Alzheimer's disease there are many moments of wonderful fun and communication when life is still lived well, having twice witnessed the end stage with my mom and sister, I struggle with this concept as death approaches. With only sporadic milliseconds of vague cognizance hemmed in by overwhelming days and weeks of vacuous stares, shrunken bodies, and lost minds, I find it hard to recognize any joy in the harrowing final stages.

The ultimate goal is 400 steps, which is 100 hours of independent reading for each student of the school. Photos by Michael Michaelsen.
We were asked: Do I have to be physically abused to get a protection order (a.k.a. restraining order) for my safety, even if I feel I am in danger? Answer: NO. According to the Nevada Revised Statutes you do NOT have to be physically injured to be a domestic violence victim or to obtain a protection order (fact: Physical abuse usually is the last step - with emotional, verbal, and economic abuse leading the way).
Humboldt Regional Planning Commissioners approved the site plan for Humboldt General Hospital's modular doctor's office clinic building. The building will be situated on railroad land across Haskell Street from the hospital. That actually elicited a question from planning commisisoners, who wondered what the terms were for the hospital's railroad land lease. HGH owner's representative Mike Sheppard said the railroad land lease was on a year-to-year basis with renewal automatic unless canceled by one party or the other.
