NNRA opens drag racing season

The Northern Nevada Racing Association (NNRA) held its 2014 Season Opener Race Event on May 16 and 17. The NNRA is a drag racing club in Winnemucca, and will host four major racing events in 2014. The Season Opener was held at the 1/8th mile Good Times Dragstrip on Jungo Road and included four separate classes of cars.

Present day Pony Express -

Carlin was the first stop along the Pony Express-like route to hand deliver petitions to Carson City. The petitions are to remove the Battle Mountain BLM District Manager Doug Furtado from his position over his dealings with local ranchers. The first leg of the 317-mile journey was ridden by Elko attorney and County Commissioner Grant Gerber with stops in Battle Mountain, Winnemucca, Lovelock and Fallon throughout the week. The entourage was in Winnemucca Wednesday afternoon and stopped briefly at The Martin Hotel.

School board meets Tuesday, June 2nd

The Humboldt County School Board, Humboldt County Commissioner, Winnemucca City Council and Winnemucca Convention and Visitors Authority will meet in the Humboldt County Courthouse meeting room at 1:45 p.m. on June 2. Items on the agenda include:

Humboldt General Hospital CEO/Administrator Jim Parrish will chair the 18th annual Western Regional Trustee Symposium this June.

Chautauqua Festival slated for June

RENO - Nevada Humanities presents the 23rd Nevada Humanities Chautauqua festival June 19-27, 2014, in Reno. Founded by Nevada Humanities in 1992, Nevada Humanities Chautauqua has inspired many Chautauqua events around the globe and is one of the longest running Chautauqua festivals in the nation. Chautauqua is a living history program in which performers, in costume and in character, bring historical figures to life in theatrical monologues. Educational and entertaining, Chautauqua programs provide dramatic insights into the people and events that have shaped our nation, and also provide a historical lens for looking at contemporary issues.

Nevada National Guard receives grant to help employ Nevada's veterans

CARSON CITY- Acknowledging Nevada's considerable veteran population, the Office of the Secretary of Defense-Reserve Affairs approved a $650,000 grant for the Nevada National Guard on May 23 to help job-seeking Nevada veterans. The funding will be used to pay for up to six contract personnel who will assist unemployed or underemployed veterans statewide to secure job opportunities. Funds from Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Reintegration Program will be a welcomed addition to achieve that program's initiatives.

Spotlight on McDermitt Alumni

MCDERMITT - While today the nursing profession is considered an honorable and even a prestigious position to hold, that has not always been the case. Florence Nightingale was born in 1820 and by age sixteen it was clear to her that nursing was her calling and believed it to be her divine purpose. At the same time her parents viewed the profession as lowly and menial labor at best. Determined to pursue her true calling despite her parents' forbidding it, she enrolled as a nursing student at the Lutheran Hospital of Pastor Fliedner in Kaiserwerth, Germany in 1844. When thousands of British soldiers were sent to the Black Sea in 1853 for the Crimean War, the people of England were in an uproar over the neglect of ill and injured men.

Thanks in great part to donations from the public and from governmental grants, we are beginning to update and remodel our kitchen. The academics of high school are often overshadowed by other festivities, sports championships, prom, extra curricular activities; teenagers in high school often aren't awarded for their daily work in the classroom. The academic assembly is a school-wide assembly where students are awarded for their academic work in the classroom.

NV forestry officials: 'Tree thinning' should improve national forest health

CARSON CITY - Nevada forestry officials say plans to thin out dead and diseased trees from several national forests in the state should help improve the forests' overall health. John Christopherson, resource program manager, Nevada Division of Forestry, says 10 areas around the state have been approved for the treatment, explaining that the thinning should help combat damage from insects and disease that weakens forests and increases the risk of wildfire.

Nevada Statehood Forever Stamp hits the market

LAS VEGAS - The U.S. Postal Service celebrated Nevada statehood by dedicating a Forever Stamp to commemorate its 150th anniversary. Known by several nicknames - the Silver State, the Battle Born State, the Sagebrush State - Nevada became the 36th state Oct. 31, 1864.

State gas prices on decline

LAS VEGAS - As the busy holiday travel season rapidly approaches, state motorists are finally starting to see a dip in prices at the pump. The average price of gas, which has been creeping up in the last month, is now beginning to decline since a week ago. Nevada's average price for a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline is $3.80, according to the AAA Nevada monthly gas survey.

CARSON CITY - May is Nevada Wildfire Awareness Month (NWAM). The theme is a call to action: Prepare Your Home For Wildfire. There are many things to do to prepare your home for fire, it's also important to have adequate insurance to protect yourself financially if a fire were to damage your home. To do this, the Nevada Division of Insurance recommends that you conduct a home inventory and an annual policy review.
