Lowry High School hosted its sixth annual Art/CTE Showcase last Thursday and invited the community to view students' projects. It is the school's way of showing the community the highlights of the school year. Community members were able to walk from building to building, stop by and purchase garden plants from the school's green house, planted and nurtured by the agriculture classes and view a variety of projects from art, drafting, graphic design, welding, woods, clothing, quilts and more.

RENO - The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) has new information about the status of some population management units (PMUs) of the Bi-State Distinct Population Segment (DPS) of greater sage-grouse along the California-Nevada border. On Oct. 28, 2013, the Service proposed to list the Bi-State DPS as threatened under the Endangered Species Act (ESA), and to designate approximately 1.86 million acres of critical habitat.

The organization that conducts these educational programs, and more than 130 others in communities across Nevada, is celebrating its centennial: University of Nevada Cooperative Extension.
French Ford Middle School Students participated in the school's 11th annual Survivor Day on Wednesday as part of end-of-the-year celebrations. In the morning, fifth graders competed against classmates in six different events: a hot-shot basketball competition, tug of war, Jeopardy, a math scavenger hunt and a "hula hoopla" contest. RENO - Several of the highest-achieving students who will graduate from northern and southern Nevada high schools are choosing to attend the University of Nevada, Reno. The University is partnering with area high schools in Nevada Scholars Signing Days, ceremonies reminiscent of high school athletes' "signing days" to acknowledge the decision of these "best and brightest" scholars to pursue their college degree in Nevada.
ELKO - Great Basin College is pleased to announce that Barrick Gold of North America has pledged nearly $1.2 million in additional funding for the college's programs and facilities. The pledge is the latest result of a partnership between Barrick and Great Basin College (GBC) that started in the 1980s, when the company began operating in Nevada. Barrick's latest commitment will support the institution's Virtual Humanities Center, Maintenance Training Cooperative (MTC), the Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs as well as outreach and recruitment of Western Shoshone students.
Developers of the "Hunter Ridge" planned subdivision finally received approval for a zone change and tentative subdivision map. The property is located east of the new Offenhauser Drive extension and south of Stewart Street. Efforts to bring the proposed subdivision through the approval process have so far taken over six months and have included four hearings before the planning commission and one before the Winnemucca City Council.

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. - As part of the Department of the Interior's ambitious youth initiative to inspire millions of young adults and veterans to play, learn, serve and work in the great outdoors and the President's 21st Century Conservation Service Corps Initiative, Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell announced $6.7 million in grants to support conservation employment and mentoring opportunities at 43 projects on public lands across the country - a 60 percent increase over last year's funding.
