Four years ago I attended the 40th anniversary of my "almost" graduating class, almost because we moved from Idaho to Eureka, Nev., before graduation. Of my 200 classmates over half joined the visit. While years had changed faces, I found that demeanors remained and that if I had known a fellow student's mother, I could easily recognize the son or daughter. BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Several Lander County ranching families are scrambling to survive after what they describe as the Battle Mountain Bureau of Land Management's decision to close the Argenta Allotment, where the families have been grazing cattle for generations.

For someone like Doug Furtado to just decide with no hearings, no anything, on his own, to destroy those families, it's not right and cannot stand," said Elko County Commissioner Grant Gerber. He is also the attorney for six ranch families near Battle Mountain who were recently told that they couldn't turn out any cattle onto the Bureau of Land Management's (BLM) Argenta Allotment.

Humboldt County Commissioners are planning a public meeting to give residents the opportunity to hear and comment on the complete Nevada Lands Task Force recommendations before they go to the Legislative Interim Committee on Public Lands toward the end of this summer. Commissioners agreed to pay to have Task Force consultant Dr. Mike Baughman travel to Winnemucca to present the report and answer any questions that may be asked by members of the public who attend the meeting.

The Great Basin College (GBC) 2014 Commencement will take place Saturday, May 17, at 10 a.m. in the Elko Convention Center. President Mark Curtis will preside over the proceedings. Four hundred and fifteen students will have earned: 58 Bachelor degrees plus one post-baccalaureate certification, 273 associate's degrees, and/or 188 certificates. Of the degrees to be awarded, 27 are from Battle Mountain, 17 from Ely, 34 from Pahrump, 39 from Winnemucca, and 298 from Elko and surrounding areas, including a number from out of state.
