RAC will tour geothermal plant

ELKO - The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will meet with the Northeastern Great Basin Resource Advisory Council (RAC) at 8 a.m., Thursday, May 15, at the Battle Mountain District Office, 50 Bastian Road, in Battle Mountain. A field tour of the Ormat's McGinness Hills geothermal power plant and surrounding area will begin at 8:45 a.m. The public and media are invited to attend.

McDermitt GEAR UP students visit GBC

In April, Great Basin College hosted a campus visit for 19 seventh and eighth grade students along with a few chaperones from McDermitt Combined School.

LHS announces April students of the month

Brooklyn Waller was nominated by Sylvia Covarrubias as the Student of the Month for the Freshman Class. Mrs. Covarrubias nominated Brooklyn because she says that she is a very good role model to both the school and our community. She is involved in school activities, sports, and our community. Covarrubias also said that Brooklyn is very dedicated in her school academics while being very positive. Mrs. Covarrubias said that she is a sunshine to Lowry High by always having a smile on her face waiting for the opportunity to make a difference in someone's life.

Artists selected for Black Rock conservation area

RENO - Friends of Black Rock-High Rock, in collaboration with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Winnemucca District Office and the Great Basin Landscape Conservation Cooperative, is pleased to announce the selection of two professional artists for the first Artist-in-Residence program in the Black Rock Desert-High Rock Canyon-Emigrant Trails National Conservation Area (NCA).

The people who bring you the mail have also been organizing the Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive every year for the past 22 consecutive years. It's one of America's great days of giving. This year's food drive will be Saturday, May 10 - the same weekend as Mothers' Day.

Nevada Connections Academy to hold information session

Nevada Connections Academy (NCA) is offering parents throughout Nevada the opportunity to learn more about this highly accountable, high-quality virtual public school during local information sessions. These information sessions also allow interested families to meet with NCA's certified teachers and parents with children currently enrolled in the school. NCA will be in Winnemucca on Tuesday, May 20 from 12 p.m. - 1:30 p.m. at the East Hall of the Winnemucca Convention Center.

Payback's a switch

Last year the challenge was made and the gauntlet thrown down. Shooting the West, the annual photography symposium held in Winnemucca, had to show a profit this year and pay back the WCVA's underwriting grant or re-think continuing the 25-year-old event. On Wednesday, April 16th, Brenda Heintz, the new Executive Director of STW, fulfilled the promise she made back in August of 2013: "Let's clear the slate of what has occurred in the past five years and give me a chance to prove to you that, together, we can make this work," by handing Terry Boyle, WCVA's Chairman, a check for $5,000.

Locals cruise to Palm Springs for car show

Local antique car collector Leland Miller and his friend, Dan Thompson recently traveled to Palm Springs, Calif., for the annual Studebaker Car Show. The Miller's Studebaker is a 1919 convertible four-door touring car with the big-six engine, rated at 60 horsepower. Miller's would love to know the history of their Studebaker, but it wasn't available when they bought the car in Idaho in 1995.

Farmers expect little or no water

A gray sky and light rain were little consolation to farmers after Monday's meeting of the Pershing County Water Conservation District Board of Directors. Although water in the Rye Patch Reservoir has risen slightly, it remains far below normal so the board voted to again postpone the irrigation season.

Introducing two new deputy DAs

One brings civil law background, one criminal law experience

District Attorney Mike Macdonald took the opportunity to introduce one of his two new deputy district attorneys to the Humboldt County Commissioners earlier this month. Macdonald said Gabrielle Carr will stand in occasionally as counsel for the county commissioners when he can't be present; she'll also sometimes represent his office as counsel for the Regional Planning Commission.

School board meets Tuesday May 13 at 4:30 p.m.

The Humboldt County School District Board of Trustees will meet on Tuesday May 13 at 4:30 p.m. The meeting will begin in the Winnemucca Junior High School Auditorium for special recognitions and then move to the district office boardroom for the superintendent's report and the remainder of the agenda. Trustees will discuss and possible act on the following items:

City's Railroad Street lighting project stalled

Cost jumped up due to easement issues

The city's plans to install lighting on Railroad Street from Potato Road to Sheehan Street have been delayed after receiving an estimate of $55,000 for the project - a far cry from the originally budgeted $13,000.
