There are a number of cancer-fighting efforts and foundations, but the funds raised through the LaRena Smith Bengoa Run, Ride, Walk for the Cure fill a unique niche. Those who have been diagnosed with cancer can apply for a grant from the LaRena Smith Bengoa Foundation to help with costs associated with cancer treatment. Sometimes great opportunities come calling. Friends Keeli McClintick and Teddy Swecker had been invited to return to Doha, Qatar, to work in an international school and I joined them. My responsibilities included professional development in differentiated writing and higher order questioning. While at first I hesitated - International school? What do I know about writing and questioning?? - seated at my computer, my fingers tapped out a hundred-page outline to prepare me for this adventure.

Certified and classified staff, along with employees who have been with the district for 20 and 25 years, were honored May 12 at the district's annual staff recognition banquet. The selections of teacher and aide of the year are based on input from the staff and administration at each school site. Those individuals have been noted for their commitment to the students at their schools. Superintendent Dr. Dave Jensen said each of those staff members is respected for the contribution that they provide to the district as a whole.
