'Living With Fire' offers free conferences to homeowners across state

Residents across the state are being encouraged to attend "Living With Fire" Regional Conferences being held this month to interact with their neighbors, firefighting representatives, natural resource specialists and others to learn how to prepare for wildfire at their homes and in their communities.

"Prepare Your Home for Wildfire" is the message for Nevada Wildfire Awareness Month, beginning May 1. Originally held for one week beginning in 2006, Nevada's Wildfire Awareness campaign has seen steady annual growth and an increasing number of communities wanting to take part. With this continued popularity, what was once a week-long effort has been extended to a month-long endeavor.

Telemedicine provides care over distances

HGH Clinic manager Lonnie Hammargren gave hospital board members an update on the roll-out of Humboldt General Hospital's new telemedicine program. The program, in conjunction with Renown Medical Center, makes it possible for people to have access to the expertise of Reno medical specialists without having to leave Winnemucca.

New X-ray equipment limits radiation exposure

Cuts exam time in half

Hospital trustees approved the purchase of new digital X-ray equipment for Humboldt General Hospital. The new equipment represents more than just an upgrade to a newer model, it cuts exam time in half because images come up on the equipment's screen immediately after the X-ray is taken. The technician knows right then whether the X-ray successfully captures the needed area, or if a repeat image is required. The images are sent wirelessly to the doctor, and to the archive system.

Volunteers attend search and rescue training

During the month of April, individuals from three Nevada counties' Search and Rescue Units attended a six day extensive course on the Fundamentals of Search and Rescue Operations.

The Humboldt Development Authority and its Winnemucca Futures Project is hosting the Third Annual Winnemucca Futures Forum 9 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 15, at the Convention Center in Winnemucca.

There are many very small communities in Humboldt County and it is always interesting to know their history-who settled them and what their visions were for this sometimes, harsh land. Some dreams perished and the folks moved on while others persisted and established livelihoods for themselves and for their descendents that followed. Adam Adrian and his wife Mary were both raised in Bavaria Germany, settled in the Quinn River Valley in 1875, relocated to Denio around 1905 building the Denio Store, and still have family in the area, including their great-great granddaughter, McDermitt Combined School Alumni Mindy (Sherburn) Northrop.

The Winnemucca Community Improvement Group Board of Directors is requesting the community's attendance at the following follow-up Community Forum to discuss the proposed Recreation/Boys and Girls Club Complex based on results from community surveys and feedback. The forum is set for Tuesday, May 27 at 6 p.m. at the Winnemucca Inn. If you cannot make the forum, please fill out the survey at the link below or a paper survey is also being mailed out to the citizens in and surrounding Winnemucca to complete.

Awareness campaign connects Nevadans to vaccine resources

RENO - The CDC estimates that vaccinations will prevent more than 21 million hospitalizations and 732,000 deaths among children born in the last 20 years. This week is National Infant Immunization Week (NIIW), an annual observance to highlight the importance of protecting infants from vaccine-preventable diseases and to celebrate the achievements of immunization programs to promote healthy communities.

Members of Lowry High School's Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) group attended their state conference in Reno last week and each of the 12 students who placed in the top ten for at least one competition; several of the students placed in the top ten for multiple competitions.

Dog loose, shot and killed at Battle Mountain park

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - A Lander County sheriff's deputy shot and killed a 9-month-old pit bull mix at Borealis Park April 28 at around 6 p.m. The shooting happened in front of small children who were playing at the park.
