Contract awarded for downtown intersection project

Construction expected to start within two months

The city recently awarded a contract to Hunewill Construction for $550,000 for its Melarkey Street/Winnemucca Boulevard intersection project and it is getting most of what was in the original design within budget.

RESTON, Va. - For it exemplary record of leadership, service, and activities that serve to improve the school and community, Lowry High School has been awarded a 2014 National Council of Excellence Award by the National Association of Student Councils (NASC).

JOYCE SHEEN • The Humboldt SunA wreck occurred at the Winnemucca Boulevard/Hanson Street intersection around 3:40 p.m. on Wednesday, April 16. A vehicle was traveling north on Hanson and turned left onto Winnemucca Boulevard, failing to yield to oncoming traffic. The driver struck a vehicle headed south on Winnemucca Boulevard and was cited for vehicle turning left and entering an intersection marked stop of yield. According to the Winnemucca Police Department, no one was transported for injuries.

Proposed arts and fire event stirs controversy

As Pershing County and Burning Man officials negotiate a new law enforcement agreement, local conflict has re-ignited over the counterculture festival. Heated discussion is likely at next week's city council meeting as officials consider an event funded in part by Black Rock Arts Foundation, a subsidiary of the Burning Man organization.

Shooting the West returns $5,000 to WCVA

STW Director reports financial success

Shooting the West Director Brenda Heintz smilingly returned $5,000 of the money advanced by the Winnemucca Convention and Visitors Authority to support the photography symposium put on this past March. Heintz was relatively new to the community and new to heading up the photography symposium when she met with WCVA board members last year to request $20,000 in support funding.

Addition to Events Center being considered

'I can think of about 50 things we could use this for tomorrow'

About a year ago the Winnemucca Convention and Visitor's Authority and Ag-3 boards started seriously considering putting an addition onto the Indoor Events Center at the Events Complex (fairgrounds). The main events center is acknowledged as a major success in making it possible for Winnemucca to attract major events - particularly during late fall, winter, and early spring, the time of year when events planners would be reluctant to put their events at the mercy of northern Nevada weather.

COURTESY PHOTOSonoma Baptist Church held its Easter Sunrise Service at the Grass Valley Community Center at 6:30 a.m. It was a brisk morning for the 40 plus attendees, but the singing and wonderful message given by Pastor Nick Cole kept us warm. Following the service we were able to go inside for a wonderful breakfast brunch and fellowship. Sonoma Baptist Church is located at the corner of Grass Valley and Muddy road. Imlay Auxiliary holds last event

Easter egg hunt in Imlay baseball field

The Imlay Auxiliary held its annual Easter Egg hunt at the Imlay baseball field, April 19. Auxiliary members hid over 350 eggs for around 20 children, for what will be the last function of the Imlay Auxiliary.

Walking a mile ...

Over 200 men showed up to the Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event Friday, which was sponsored by the White Ribbon Organization, Barrick Gold Corp. and Winnemucca Domestic Violence Services. Men in the community donned high heels to show their support for awareness of gender-based violence.
