Students from across the district participated in the annual Ag in the Classroom event at the fairgrounds last week and learned about a variety of agricultural topics ranging from farm animals to wheat and wool.

WCVA grants $6,000 for high school rodeo

Community events, convention facilities also get attention

Humboldt County High School Rodeo Club President Savannah Montero (18), and club members, Chris Gleason (15), Shaylee Robertson (16), Kyle Kemp (15), and Julianne Montero (12) came before Winnemucca Convention and Visitors' Authority (WCVA) to request help to put on the upcoming High School Rodeo. They were granted $6,000.

National Bookmobile Day was celebrated nationwide this week

Local bookmobile helps bring written word to rurals

The Humboldt County Bookmobile has been traveling the rural roads of northern Nevada since the 60s and bookmobile coordinator Ginny Dufurrena has been driving the bus for 14 years this month.

Easter egg hunt moves to Saturday

This year marks the second annual Easter egg hunt since community member Kathi Wolfsteller took over, and she said the biggest change participants can expect this year is the move from Sunday to Saturday.

Forest service looking for contract drivers

SPARKS - The Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest is soliciting quotes for vehicles with drivers for fire suppression. The types of vehicles are sport utility vehicles, pickup trucks, stakesides and passenger vans for use during local, regional, and nationwide fire suppression and all-hazard incidents. Individuals will have to have all required driving and registration documentation within the state of residence.

Officers gather for 420 Conference -

For the second year in a row, The Humboldt County Sheriff's Office hosted its annual 420 Conference which brought law enforcement from across the county for a week of training and instruction on the most up-to-date law enforcement practices.

Humbolt County Commissioners will meet Monday April 21 at 9 a.m.

HGH future building workshop tomorrow at 8 a.m.

Humboldt General Hospital Board members are gathering this Saturday for a workshop with CTA architects and with the hospital's accounting firm, Clifton Larson Allen. The meeting will begin at 8 a.m. and has been left open-ended so hospital board members can take the time they need to ask questions and receive much more information than they would be able to in a regular board meeting.

Earth Day and Arbor Day are celebrated this week

The City of Winnemucca is celebrating Arbor Day in conjunction with the community garden to recognize the importance of healthy trees in the community and fulfill a final requirement to become a member of Tree City U.S.A.

City council meets Tuesday, April 22

The Winnemucca City Council meets Tuesday, April 22, at 2 p.m. at City Hall. City officials will discuss and possibly take action on the following agenda items:

Two young men sentenced to prison in last week's court

Lane Charlie Tom, 22, was sentenced in Sixth Judicial District Court last Tuesday for a sexual assault and kidnapping that occurred in downtown Winnemucca in September; Lane will spend a minimum of 25 years in prison for the crimes.

Commissioners continue work on water quality issues

City Manager/Engineer Steve West came to the county commission meeting earlier this month to discuss protection of groundwater. West outlined the city's well-head protection program and explained that the state mandates such a program for all municipal water systems.
