Man sentenced to prison following lengthy court process

Courthouse had added security because of defendant's threats

Herbert S. Olson was sentenced to prison Monday in Sixth Judicial District Court for transporting a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance for sale; his sentence came three attorneys, two years and one jury trial after his arrest.

Bookmobile coordinator Ginny Dufurrena visited Cheri Duncan's home childcare on Monday with a special guest - Bob the rooster. Dufurrena read "Bob" (a book about a rooster who doesn't know how to crow) to the kids and then she brought the real Bob out to let everyone meet him.

LHS announces student elections results

Lowry held their annual student elections on Feb. 27, 2014. There were a total of 28 students that participated in the election process this year. In order to run there was a series of steps that needed to be completed by the students.

Winnemucca 5th for homeownership in state

Nevada was one of the hardest-hit states during the foreclosure crisis in the late 2000s, and the housing market is still in recovery. But in 2013, home values headed up while foreclosure rates headed down, according to a report from the Lied Institute for Real Estate Studies at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. The state is also an attractive place for both residents and businesses because Nevada collects neither individual nor corporate income taxes. And for potential homebuyers, the Nevada Housing Division and the Nevada Rural Housing Authority offer homebuyer education classes, budgeting help and even financial assistance.

Lander County commissioners sided with south county residents who fear the Bureau of Land Management's oil and gas lease sale in July could result in fracking near their homes.

HEATHER HILL • The Humboldt SunThe seventh annual Lincoln Highway Car Show, held in Austin April 12, was the biggest one ever with more than 70 vehicles and over 300 people. There were hot rods, sports cars, vintage vehicles, classic cars, muscle cars and more lining both sides of Main Street. The event included vendors, a live band, a tri-tip barbecue hosted by the Austin Volunteer Fire Department, a signature 150th celebration and a dedication of the Austin Loneliest Highway Visitor Center. This 1968 Kenworth semi-tractor, owned by Larry Clewell, of Virginia City, seemed to impress event attendees.

SBA Economic Injury Disaster Loans available to Nevada small businesses

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Small, nonfarm businesses in six Nevada counties and neighboring counties in Idaho and Utah are now eligible to apply for low-interest federal disaster loans from the U. S. Small Business Administration (SBA). "These loans offset economic losses because of reduced revenues caused by the drought that began on April 1, 2014, in the following primary counties," announced Tanya N. Garfield, Director of SBA's Disaster Field Operations Center-West.

VFW donates to county senior citizens

The Senior Citizens of Humboldt County, Inc. Board of Trustees was proud to be selected as a recipient of a charitable donation by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Ms. Jessica Smith, Adjutant/Advocate and veteran of the Korean Campaign presented the check for $500 to Board of Trustees Treasurer Charlie Beringer in a short ceremony after lunch on April 10, 2014.

Landfill Comittee meets Monday, April 21

The landfill committee will meet Monday April 21 at 3 p.m. The agenda includes approval - amendment of the minutes from the last meeting, January 21. The committee will review the quarterly recycling report and authorize release of recycling grant funds. A report on possible billing alternatives for commercial landfill accounts will be presented and discussed. And the comptroller's office will present a request to write off uncollectable accounts.
