Ty Albisu was arrested Friday following a report of a domestic battery; he had two handguns on him at the time of his arrest, according to a Humboldt County Sheriff's Office release.
The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced that the Social Security Administration (SSA) is now able to process requests for Medicare Part A and Part B Special Enrollment Periods, and reductions in Part B and premium Part A late enrollment penalties for certain eligible people in same-sex marriages. This is another step HHS is taking in response to the June 26, 2013 Supreme Court ruling in U.S. v. Windsor, which held section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) unconstitutional. Because of this ruling, Medicare is no longer prevented by DOMA from recognizing same-sex marriages for determining entitlement to, or eligibility, for Medicare.

Nevada residents shoulder the 8th lowest state-local tax burden in the country, according to the Annual State-Local Tax Burdens report released today by the nonpartisan Tax Foundation. Using the most up-to-date data available, the report shows that taxpayers in Nevada paid 8.1 percent of their collective incomes in state and local taxes in 2011. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has published in the Federal Register a second Notice of Intent to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement for a proposed open-pit gold mine about 50 miles west of Ely, in White Pine County, Nevada. The notice announces the extension of the public input period for an additional 30-day period that will end April 28.

SAN DIEGO - The Internal Revenue Service today offered seven quick tax tips to taxpayers with a week left before the 2014 tax-filing deadline. Those who need more time to complete their returns should submit their requests for an automatic extension electronically or by paper on form 4868 by April 15, 2014.

April 6 through the 12 marks National Crime Victim's Rights Week. Winnemucca will commemorate our nation's progress in advancing victim's rights by hosting a Celebration at the Museum on April 12, 2014 from 12 - 3 p.m. hosted by Winnemucca Domestic Violence Services (WDVS). During this celebration there will be food, games, a scavenger hunt with prizes and free gifts to those who attend. WDVS will be joined by other community organizations with informational booths and give-away items also.

David Lee Karrer, a Humboldt County Sheriff's deputy, was sentenced Monday in Sixth Judicial District Court to up to two years probation - as part of a diversion program that involves counseling for alcohol abuse - for firing a gun into a television in his home last summer.
