Spotlight On McDermitt Alumni: Brandy (Hawks) Romantic Class of 1991

In the early 1970s Dave Hawks left Montana for Boise, Idaho, as a single parent, to seek employment and make a fresh start for himself and his nine children - the oldest of whom was only 14 at the time! It was there that he met Lynn Brixey of Caldwell, who was also the single parent of McDermitt Combined School Alumni Brandy (Hawks) Romantic. Brandy, who was born in Boise in 1973, was about 1-year-old when she joined her nine half siblings. Her step sister Tina - the youngest of the nine- was only a year older. Brandy shared her half brothers and sisters last name and says that Dave Hawks was the only father she ever had.

Arts Town coming to Winnemucca

The Nevada Arts Council is launching a series of Arts Town meetings to engage community members across the state in conversations about arts and culture. A meeting in Winnemucca is scheduled for April 7 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at City Hall.

DAN MCGEE • Special to The SunThe final laps of the wreck-filled IMCA Modified main at the Fernley 95A Speedway last weekend, turned into a duel between Winnemucca resident Corey Sample (111) and Susanville, Calif., driver Riley Simmons (21R). The cars were close during the final two-lap dash to the checkered flag where Sample scored the victory.

Progress being made on new city station

JESSICA POWELL • The Humboldt SunProgress on the new Winnemucca City Fire Station is moving along despite the recent bad weather. The foundation for the building has been poured and the masonry block walls are under construction. The new station, a nearly $1.7 million project, is located on East Winnemucca Boulevard behind the golf course.

Banquet honors law enforcement for 43rd year

The annual Peace Officers Banquet is scheduled for April 24 to honor and recognize the law enforcement officers who keep the community safe.

Nearly 40 youth from five Nevada counties participated in the Pershing County 4-H/FFA Livestock Judging held March 15, 2014 at the Pershing County 4-H Building. Participants evaluated classes of beef, sheep, swine and goats as well as presented their reasons for such evaluation.

Distracted drivers focus of law enforcement through April 20

Between now and April 20, Nevada's Joining Forces law enforcement team will be cracking down on distracted drivers throughout the state. Nevada law clearly states that any use of a handheld electronic device-cell phone, mp3 player, GPS device, etc.-while driving is illegal and offenders will be pulled over and cited.
