WDVS: domestic violence screenings 'so important'

Winnemucca Domestic Violence Services and the Nevada Network Against Domestic Violence are promoting domestic violence screenings and are encouraging local doctors to implement them.

RENO - The University of Nevada, Reno had several notable rankings in the annual listing of the nation's best graduate schools and programs released in March by U.S. News and World Report. Overall, the University achieved an all-time-high with four graduate school and 24 graduate program rankings.

From hesitancy to proficiency in writing

In working with students on writing, I can tell you that all have brilliant ideas to share. Some are hesitant because somehow they have developed the impression that they cannot write. Others are just nervous about getting started. These are often perfectionists who want the opening sentence to be perfect and so they think and sigh, or perhaps they groan as they search for an ideal launch. Another group shudders. They have been criticized in the past, or they view "help" from outsiders as an invasion of their personal effort, and so they vacillate between "I can..." and I can never..." and so frequently, they don't.

State unemployment rate drops to 8.7 percent

Nevada's unemployment rate fell in January to 8.7 percent. January also marked the 37th year-over-year job growth.

NRCS has drought help for ranchers

RENO - NRCS Nevada has requested additional financial assistance to assist farmers and ranchers through a special initiative for agricultural producers impacted by the exceptional drought the state is experiencing. Applications are being taken at local USDA service centers through April 18.

SBA Surety Bond program helps Nevada Small Businesses win $4 million in contracts

LAS VEGAS - With the help of the Small Business Administration's Surety Bond Guarantee Program small construction firms were awarded in fiscal year 2013 more than $1.2 billion in contracts. This number represents a 61 percent increase over fiscal year 2012. SBA also guaranteed bonds for public and private contract bids valued at $4.9 billion, resulting in a total contract amount of more than $6.1 billion.

Blood drive next week

The Humboldt Hospital Auxiliary along with United Blood Services in Reno will host its annual March Community Blood Drive from noon to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 25, and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Cooperative Extension 4-H youth place in top 10 at national competition

Nevada youth show off their knowledge of horses

RENO - University of Nevada Cooperative Extension 4-H members represented Nevada well in three competitions at the 2014 Western National Roundup in Denver, Colo., placing in the top 10 in three competitions. The group of 11 teens, split into two teams of four and one team of three, competed against teams and individuals from 30 other states and Alberta, Canada.
