Great Basin College takes on more of rural Nevada

ELKO - On March 7, 2014 the Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents unanimously approved the ad hoc Committee's report on Shared Services and Service Areas which included the assigning of Lincoln County, Esmeralda County, Mineral County and Pershing County to Great Basin College. GBC already provides postsecondary educational offerings and services to six rural Nevada counties (i.e., Elko, White Pine, Nye, Humboldt, Lander, and Eureka) through its main campus in Elko, centers in Ely, Pahrump, Winnemucca and Battle Mountain and 17 other instructional sites.

The annual Nevada Regional Mine Rescue Competition took place at the Winnemucca Events Complex Tuesday through Thursday. Underground mine rescue teams from the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colo.; the Climax Molybdenum mine in Empire, Colo.; the Heckla Limited mine in Mullan, Idaho; the Barrick Cortez mine in Crescent Valley; the Barrick Goldstrike mine in Elko; the Newmont Carlin mine in Elko; and the Barrick Turquoise Ridge mine in Golconda competed in written and field tests. The winner was announced Thursday night at an awards ceremony (after press time). On Wednesday, teams were presented with rescue scenarios that lasted approximately two hours and involved a meticulous process of rescuing trapped miners. The photos on this page are of the Barrick Turquoise Ridge underground mine rescue team, which competed at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Fair links employers, reserve military job seekers
