Mosquito spraying to start this weekend

The Mosquito Service Provider for the City of Winnemucca and Humboldt County, VDCI, will soon begin aerial missions targeting adult mosquitoes in the Humboldt River basin.

Feds announce $31.2 million in PILT funds headed to Nevada

The Department of the Interior today announced that 17 local governments in Nevada will receive a total of $31.2 million in Payments in Lieu of Taxes (PILT) funding for 2023. Because local governments cannot tax federal lands, annual PILT payments help to defray the costs associated with maintaining important community services. Humboldt County will receive $2,184, 255, Lander County $1,190,500 and Pershing County $1,307, 830.

Water balloons banned at this year’s Fourth of July Parade

The annual Fourth of July Parade, sponsored by the Silver State International Rodeo (SSIR), is known to get a bit wild with water balloons flying every which way, some with a lot of force, but this year, both the City of Winnemucca and SSIR are banning water balloons. The City and SSIR officials have assured that parade participants and the crowds will be allowed to uphold the traditions of using water guns and other water play, but many reports of injuries and other accidents related to water balloons have been cause for the ban.

NDOT to resurface sections of State Route 140 near Nevada/Oregon state line

Travel delays will be in place on sections of State Route 140 beginning June 19 as the Nevada Department of Transportation resurfaces the highway.

Free foster care training available for those interested in getting licensed

There are about 400 kids in the rural foster care system at any given time, and a significant lack of licensed foster care families. In an effort to bridge the gap of need vs. supply, the Nevada Division of Child & Family Services (DCFS) is hosting a free, online pre-service training for foster care applicants during July and August.

City rejects request from employees to use COVID relief funds for retention bonus to combat inflation

Although the Winnemucca City Council approved a seven percent Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) increase for the next two years for city employees, they denied a request by the Winnemucca City Employee Association (WCEA) and the Winnemucca Police Officers Association (WPOA) for a retention bonus. The decisions came during a regular meeting June 6.

Little League all stars get underway in Elko and Fernley

The Little League District 3 all-star tournament gets underway this week in Elko with three divisions of action. The 8-10-year-old division starts on Friday with Silverada (Dayton) playing Walker River (Yerington) at 8 a.m. In the other portion of the bracket Winnemucca plays High Desert (Fernley) at 5:30 p.m.

Ongi Etorri — Winnemucca celebrates Basque culture

The Winnemucca Basque Festival returned for its 43rd annual event at the Winnemucca Convention Center on June 10-11. Dancers from Elko, Reno and Boise, Idaho traveled to Winnemucca, as well as performances from the Winnemucca Irrintzi dancers. In addition to great food and dancing, there were various contests and bread auctions as well.

McDermitt graduates class of two students

McDermitt Combined School held its graduation last week, celebrating the two seniors in the small class of 2023. Elias Smart and valedictorian Noah Frey were honored in front of family, friends and staff, even though Frey was not able to attend the ceremony.

WINNEMUCCA — The Humboldt County Board of Commissioners will hold their regularly scheduled meeting on Monday beginning at 9:30 a.m. in courthouse meeting room #201.

Planning commission to meet on Thursday

WINNEMUCCA — The Humboldt County Regional Planning Commission will hold its regularly scheduled meeting on Thursday beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the courthouse meeting room. Public commentary follows the call to order, Pledge of Allegiance and roll call. The review and possible correction and approval of minutes from the June 23 and July 14 meetings will be followed by requests for postponement of agenda items.

Airport Board to meet on Monday

WINNEMUCCA - The Winnemucca/Humboldt Airport Board will hold their regularly scheduled meeting on Monday at 7 p.m. in the City Hall meeting room, 90 W. Fourth St.
