Community gathers to honor EMT killed in accident

Law enforcement officers and medical service personnel from across northern Nevada came to Winnemucca to participate in the escort of Christian Echevarria to Paradise Valley where his memorial service was held on Wednesday, Jan. 15. The escort was followed by the funeral service.

WINNEMUCCA - Humboldt County will soon be designated Storm Ready through a program from the National Weather Service Office in Elko that ensures communication, infrastructure, and emergency planning is in place to protect life and property from severe weather and other disasters.

Winnemucca has five new storm spotters

WINNEMUCCA - There are five new storm spotters in the Winnemucca area, who will work with the National Weather Service (NWS) office in Elko to report on weather conditions where they are. NWS Senior Meteorologist Brian Boyd presented Storm Spotter Training on Jan. 7.

Nevada's average weekly wages up year over year

CARSON CITY - Average weekly wages in Nevada measured $829 in the second quarter of 2013, the highest reading for the three-month period on record. Nevadans are earning 1.8 percent more than this time last year, said Bill Anderson, chief economist for Nevada's Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.

Nevada U.S. attorney's office collects $18 million in 2013

LAS VEGAS - U.S. Attorney Daniel G. Bogden has announced the Nevada U.S. Attorney's Office collected $18 million in fiscal year 2013 related to criminal, civil and asset forfeiture actions. Of this amount, $10.5 million was collected in criminal actions, $1.6 million was collected in civil actions, and $5.9 million was collected in criminal and civil forfeitures.

Small farm workshop to educate on livestock processing options

Economic development center looks to educate local producers on regulations

RENO - The University of Nevada, Reno University Center for Economic Development is offering a marketing workshop prior to the Nevada Small Farm Conference designed to assist area meat producers in identifying state and federal regulations and ensure producers are selling within the applicable laws. This is the third meat marketing workshop in a series of five to be held through June 2014.

Medicaid caseload volume has increased

CARSON CITY - Mike Willden, Nevada Health and Human Services Director, announced recently that caseload activity after the Oct. 1, 2013 launch of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), is higher than initially projected. Medicaid caseload has increased by 10,483 cases from 330,623 at the end of September to 341,106 at the end of December 2013. Original estimates placed Medicaid caseload at 336,195 by end of 2013.

WINNEMUCCA - The Regional Transportation Commission is holding its next meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 21 at 9:15 a.m. Items on the agenda include appointment of the chairman and vice chairman for 2014; discussion of December meeting minutes; action on expenditure claims; discussion of priority projects for the county and city; report on NDOT programs; commissioner member reports. Public comment will follow.
