Humboldt County employees recognized for service

At the first commission meeting of the year, Humboldt County commissioners recognized employees who have stayed at their jobs for five, 10, 15, 25 and 35 years. The employees who were present to receive their plaques are pictured: (left to right top row), Sharon Barton, Debbie Engstrom, and Juan Acevedo, (second row), Shane Goodale, Betty Lawrence, Tami Rae Spero, Jessica Park, Colleen Cox and Bobby Thomas, (up front) Mary Ann Hammond and Anita Paquette. County Administrator Bill Deist said how much the county appreciates its longterm employees, adding that having employees who stay at their job saves taxpayers money while allowing the county to run more efficiently. LOOKING BACK

My great-grandfather, W.W. Fisk, was a mining engineer. This day and this tank became a family story. The owner of the mine purchased it from a defunct mine site and wanted it shipped. He brought it into town just as you see it here. Big problem. The Western Pacific Railroad, the railroad closest to his workings, is across that bridge and the tank didn't fit. It couldn't cross the bridge. Somebody didn't do their measuring! Great grandpa is standing on the running board. He was a polite man so he wasn't cussing though I bet he felt like it. They did get that tank to its destination, just not on the Western Pacific.

Wade sentencing continued following hearing

Thomas Wade George (left), who previously pleaded guilty to child abuse, neglect or endangerment, was in court for a continued sentencing hearing Monday but the hearing was once again continued due to the lack of a psycho-sexual evaluation. George was originally scheduled for sentencing Nov. 18 but did not have the evaluation completed at the time so the hearing was continued. At Monday's hearing, George told Judge Richard Wagner he had gone to the appointment and received the evaluation but no one in court had a copy of the report. Although the victim's mother was present in court to give a victim impact statement, Wagner said he would continue the sentencing once more and put the burden on George's attorney (Steve Evenson, right) to obtain the report. Without a pscyho-sexual evaluation, George cannot be considered for probation. The victim's mother was given the opportunity to speak on the record while she was in the courtroom, but Deputy District Attorney Richard Haas indicated she would return to see the process through. Sentencing was set for Jan. 24 at 4 p.m.MICHAEL MICHAELSEN • Special to the Sun

Purple Ribbon Day comes to Winnemucca

Mayoral proclamation expected at next city council meeting

WINNEMUCCA - Exciting news for our community! After suggestions from those who stopped by the Winnemucca Alzheimer's Support Group table at the Winnemucca Wine Walk last summer, co-facilitator Joyce Mendiola and I are planning an Alzheimer's Awareness Day. Thanks to our mayor, Di An Putnam, this special day, Jan. 24, will be proclaimed at the Jan. 21, 2014 meeting of our city council. Our goal is to advance awareness of this insidious disease that strikes millions. Look for posters at businesses around town. You will recognize these with their purple background or lettering and flowing purple ribbon and attached informational flyers. The posters include the 10 warning signs of the possibility of Alzheimer's disease and our event highlight - bow tie tying.
