UNR cyber security center to build new programs

RENO - The University of Nevada, Reno is establishing the Cyber Security Center, which will support economic development in Nevada through education, research and outreach to industry by addressing the growing national challenge of cyber security.

New NHP sergeant

JESSICA POWELL • The Humboldt SunNevada Highway Patrol Battle Mountain Trooper Arthur Aten (left) was officially promoted to sergeant during a ceremony at the Winnemucca NHP office Wednesday afternoon. Aten served as a trooper in Battle Mountain for 14 years and said he is "humbled to have this much responsibility." Lt. Greg Johnson (right) said, "I am looking forward to working with Arthur and bringing some stability to the district." Aten attended the promotion ceremony with his wife Ambur and daughters Marisa, 10, and Jessie, 14.

Community support partners for Nevada College Kick Start program sought

Program aims to improve Nevada's college graduation rate

CARSON CITY - State Treasurer Kate Marshall recently announced that her office is partnering with CFED, the Corporation for Enterprise Development, to enlist financial supporters for the Nevada College Kick Start Program, which has established $50 college savings accounts for many Nevada 2013-2014 public school kindergarten students. The Nevada College Kick Start Program is using a portion of program manager fees paid to Treasurer's Office, not taxpayer dollars, to open the college savings accounts.

WINNEMUCCA - The Great Basin College agriculture program is under review because of a mandate from the Nevada System of Higher Education that requires programs with a low number of graduates to be evaluated for viability.

'Dyslexia Solved' class offered at GBC

Interactive video will stream to Winnemucca

ELKO - Great Basin College is offering "Dyslexia Solved: A Guide for Parents and Teachers of Struggling Readers" on two Wednesdays from 5:30 - 6:45 p.m., this Feb.5 and 12 at Great Basin College in Elko. Due to popularity, interactive video sites have been added and the class will be broadcast to the Winnemucca Center room 109, Ely room 105, Battle Mountain computer lab, Pahrump room 124, and West Wendover Elementary School Modular 7.

Beloved Girl Scout cookies on sale once again

RENO - New Year's resolutions will crumble as the 2014 Girl Scout Cookie Program returns to northern Nevada and northeastern California. The Cookie Program will run now through March 23 with door-to-door sales in January, and deliveries in February. Troops will host their Cookie Booths in front of retail shops and grocery stores in March.

NRCS accepting applications for Farm and Ranch Lands Protection Program

RENO -The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is accepting applications for fiscal year 2014 funding for the Farm and Ranch Lands Protection Program (FRPP). The purpose of FRPP is to protect agricultural use and related conservation values of eligible land by limiting non-agricultural uses of the land through the acquisition of conservation easements.

Health indicators list to streamline Nevada health data

CARSON CITY - Public health departments and other entities are required to complete regular assessments of community health. In order to simplify this process and make data more comparable between Nevada counties and the state, a statewide workgroup has completed a Nevada Core Health Indicators list.
