WINNEMUCCA - The Nevada Department of Veterans Services (NDVS) Veterans Outreach "ROVER" Program will visit Winnemucca so veterans and family members will be able to meet with a Veterans Service Officer (VSO) to learn about benefits and services they may be eligible for but unaware of.

CARSON CITY - Consumers who enrolled in a health plan through Nevada Health Link and paid their first month premium by the deadline will have health insurance coverage beginning Jan. 1, 2014. Those who enrolled close to the deadline will not receive an insurance card from the carrier by Jan. 1, 2014.
WINNEMUCCA - The National Weather Service in Elko will be providing a no prior registration and free two-hour Skywarn Spotter training session in Winnemucca from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tues., Jan. 7.
WINNEMUCCA - The first Humboldt County Commission meeting of the new year will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 6. Agenda items include a determination for how long the commission chair and co-chair will serve, and then the election of the chair and co chair for the term determined. Annual service awards will be presented to county officials and employees, recognizing years of service to the county. The commissioners will determine committee and board assignments for individual commissioners for 2014. An annual policy manual update is scheduled for 10:10. Appointment to the Orovada Rodent Control District will follow at 10:25.
WINNEMUCCA - Humboldt County's audit for the 2012-2013 fiscal year (ended June 30, 2013) showed local county government on sound financial ground, with no debt and healthy ending fund balances. The county consistently budgets very conservatively by estimating costs high and revenue low, so that at the end of each fiscal year the money spent is always less than budgeted and the revenue received is higher than estimated.
Kaia FIT held their second annual Freedom Run on Veterans Day at our local National Guard Armory. It was a huge success, earning $688 to go towards the Wounded Warrior Project!

WINNEMUCCA - The Humboldt County Library and the Northern Nevada Arts Council presents "Words + Images: Broadsides from the Black Rock Press," featuring 34 broadsides produced at the Black Rock Press at the University of Nevada, Reno using the letterpress process with handset type and relief plates. The printing was done on a Vandercook cylinder proofing press.
WINNEMUCCA - "Make Christmas Special" is what lead Pogonip Fro-Yo employees to unselfishly give big this year. The crew at Pogonip collaborated for a few minutes during their first Christmas Party and decided they would adopt a local family for the holidays.
DAVE MUNK • Special to the Sun There are a lot of Lowry High School students involved in music. They're spread among the band and percussion classes, two guitar classes, concert choir and swing choir. Teacher Paul Criddle said they all worked hard to get ready for their Christmas concert, which came quickly on the heels of their fall concert. Criddle said they did a good job and performed well. WINNEMUCCA - One Winnemucca woman got lucky recently.
COURTESY PHOTOGrass Valley Elementary School hosted a Writers Workshop for third and fourth grade students Dec. 6. Any student that wanted to attend was invited. Despite the winter snow storm, 46 students attended. Students were divided into small groups with one teacher and a high school Honor Society member volunteer. They were introduced to different styles of writing and were encouraged to use these styles as a writing model.Students illustrated their story, using different art mediums. Each student's story and illustration will be published in a book that will be kept in the school library.After their work, the authors played Star Wars in the gym and were treated to ice cream sundaes.
CARSON CITY - Preliminary numbers show 259 traffic fatalities occurred on Nevada roads in 2013, compared to 262 deaths in 2012.
