BLM begins public scoping for Robertson Mine Project

BATTLE MOUNTAIN — The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Battle Mountain District, Mount Lewis Field Office announced its intent to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement for the proposed Robertson Mine Project and will be conducting two public scoping meetings. The meetings will be held online on Thursday, Aug. 31, 2023, at 2 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time and Friday, Sept. 1, 2023, at 5 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time.

McDermitt attracts more lithium mining exploration

Longtime businessman, fire chief named Labor Day Grand Marshal

The decades-long “voice” of the Labor Day Parade has a new job this year: Torrey Sheen will serve as the 2023 Grand Marshal. Torrey has been a mainstay in the Humboldt County community for many years—from his many years in radio broadcasting, to his time on local boards and organizations, to his current appointment as Chief of the Winnemucca Rural Fire Department. Being named the 2023 Labor Day Grand Marshal is just one more line on a growing list of decades-long accomplishments.

Humboldt County School board continues discussion regarding critical vacancies left at McDermitt school

The countdown until school starts is on and the Humboldt County School District (HCSD) Board of Trustees met for their regular meeting on Aug. 8 and discussed the remaining teaching vacancies for the 2023-2024 school year. Trustees Abe Swensen, Jenna Owen, and Nicole Bengochea were absent from the meeting.

When individuals are arrested and brought to the Humboldt County Detention Center they are thoroughly searched as a part of booking measures. Deputies have been known to find many different things on all types of persons, illegal or not, and this often poses safety risks to deputies and inmates.

City of Winnemucca awards bid for major pavement project

'Tis the season for road and street maintenance, repair and construction in Winnemucca. The Winnemucca City Council recently awarded a bid for a large pavement project to Sierra Nevada Construction at its regular meeting on Aug. 8 with all members present.

Lunches are served each weekday at noon and soup and croutons is served at 11 a.m. the Pleasant Senior Center, 1480 Lay Street. Lunches are open to the public. Suggested minimum donation is $4 for seniors age 60 and older. Visitors must be 16 years or older. Their meal is $10.

GOP Senate leader Heidi Seevers Gansert won’t run for re-election in 2024

After nearly two decades in Nevada politics, Republican Senate Minority Leader Heidi Seevers Gansert (R-Reno) told The Nevada Independent that she will not run for re-election in her competitive Northern Nevada Senate district in 2024, leaving her seat open for the first time since 2016. Selected as the Senate minority leader for the 2023 legislative session, Seevers Gansert, 60, was among the most powerful Republican lawmakers in Carson City last session, wielding a caucus just large enough to block measures, such as tax increases, that required two-thirds passage.

Agency given deadline to explain why wild horse roundup should continue

A judge has asked federal land managers to explain why they should be allowed to continue capturing more than 2,500 wild horses in northeastern Nevada — a roundup opponents say is illegal and has left 31 mustangs dead in 26 days.

Bridge closure will bring major traffic interruptions

Just one week before school resumes in Humboldt County, the Nevada Department of Transportation will be closing the bridge on Hanson Street in order to resurface the state route. The closure will result in detouring 12,000 motorists who utilize the overpass daily to just two alternate crossings at Bridge Street and East Winnemucca Boulevard. There are no plans from NDOT to relieve stress on the four-way stop near the railroad tracks (Bridge Street and Haskell), such as additional traffic controls during peak commute times.
