School board discusses how to fill critical vacancies at McDermitt school

The amount of teacher vacancies left within the Humboldt County School District (HCSD) for the 2024-2025 school year has dwindled from the double digits to just four as of July 25. Unfortunately, three of the four are at the remote rural school McDermitt Combined School in the core subjects English and Science, as well as the position of social worker.

County and city approve annual cost shares

The Humboldt County Board of Commissioners and the Winnemucca City Council met for a joint meeting to discuss a shared cost agreement for the 2023-2024 fiscal year. The proposal was unanimously approved by both the Board and the council as a part of the Commission's regular meeting on July 24 (with all members present).

Nation experiencing widespread blood shortage

Northern Nevada is currently down to a two-day supply of blood, according to Humboldt General Hospital (HGH) Wellness Coordinator Billie Lucero Goodale. Nationally, the shortage has reached emergency levels and the only way to combat this problem is through donation.

The National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges (NCJFCJ) honored Judge Michael Montero with its Innovator of the Year Award, presented at the 9th annual Justice Innovation Awards ceremony on July 18.

Nevada Gold Mines funds $100,000 in scholarships for GBC Social Work Program

Nevada Gold Mines (NGM) has committed to funding $100,000 in scholarships for students pursuing a bachelor’s degree through the Great Basin College Social Work Program. NGM Behavioral Health Scholarships will be awarded to junior and senior students who reside in Elko, Lander, Humboldt, and Eureka Counties. Students must be committed to working in northern Nevada for three years following graduation.

On the night of July 20, 2023, Officers from the Winnemucca Police Department responded to a single family residence in Winnemucca for a report of a male juvenile shooting his friend.

Another roadblock for the Lovelock Boys and Girls Club?

City auditor Teri Gage participated in last Tuesday's city council meeting by phone. Mayor Michael Giles requested her insight on how to donate funds to non-profits. Several community members want to start a boys and girls club in Lovelock. They've asked the City of Lovelock for $100,000.

The latest bid by conservationists and tribal leaders to block construction of a huge lithium mine already in the works along the Nevada-Oregon line was denied by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Monday, July 17.

NV Energy seeks to convert final coal plant to natural gas

NV Energy intends to convert its last coal generation plant to natural gas, the utility announced Wednesday, July 19.. The utility will file an amendment to its 2021 Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) for review by the Public Utilities Commission later this month outlining the retirement plan. The amendment is the utility’s fifth to its IRP.

NOS teaches kids about watersheds

During the months of April and May, Nevada Outdoor School put on their largest field trip of the year. Between 4 Nevada counties, 761 students and 38 teachers participated in the 2023 Watershed Heroes Field Trip for 2nd graders. Students learned about how they live in a watershed and ways to respect and protect their watershed while interacting with it!

Humboldt County Commission considers establishing dog control district

For those that live within certain boundaries in Winnemucca, certain rural areas and Golconda, animal control services are readily available. Those that live outside of the boundaries however, are unable to use the services despite paying certain taxes that go towards the cost of the services.

Cardenas brothers serve respective communities over 900 miles apart

Despite being almost 1,000 miles apart the majority of the year, Humboldt County Sheriff Angel Cardenas and his brother, Morrill County (Nebraska) Sheriff Milo Cardenas remain close. It’s not every day that two brothers from the same hard-working family in Winnemucca are able to climb the ranks and both become leaders in local law enforcement.

In rare move, Lithium Americas sues Thacker Pass protesters

After getting hammered with lawsuits aimed at halting development of a lithium mine at Northern Nevada’s Thacker Pass, a Canadian-based mining company has turned the tables and is suing the mine’s protesters.
