WINNEMUCCA - Our Winnemucca FFA chapter has had an eventful summer this year. We would like to thank all of our supporters during our car wash on July 1-2.

NV Energy awards 56 college scholarships totaling $59,000

RENO - NV Energy has awarded 56 college scholarships totaling $59,000 to graduating high school seniors throughout northern Nevada as well as college students already enrolled in northern Nevada colleges. Scholarships were given to high school seniors from Reno, Sparks, Minden, Carson City, Gardnerville, Stateline, Fallon, Incline Village, Spring Creek, Elko and Winnemucca.

WINNEMUCCA - The Santa Rosa Mountain Range, located north of Winnemucca, is one of the most visually stunning and underutilized recreation destinations in the state. Despite being prime country for ATV touring, there are no well-marked motorized trail routes designed for unobstructed touring anywhere in the District. During meetings of the Humboldt (NV) Resource Advisory Committee in 2011, members voiced community support for increasing ATV recreation opportunities in the Santa Rosas.

Man arrested on suspicion of sexual assault on juvenile

WINNEMUCCA - Jorge Cordova Velasquez, 62, was arrested on Aug. 23 on four counts of sexual assault of a minor under the age of 14, according to a Winnemucca Police Department news release.

Plenty to see and do at Tri-County Fair & Stampede

For many people, the Tri-County Fair is all about carnival rides and corn dogs. But for others, it's a once-a-year shot at showcasing their ability to do everything from bottling prize-winning pickles to sewing a stunningly beautiful quilt. Others enjoyed the rodeo's 92nd year on Saturday, with thousands in prize money up for grabs by cowboys and cowgirls. New this year at the fair were the tractor and truck pulls on Sunday. Kids loved the petting zoo and the many vendors and activities that made this end-of-the-summer event a fun weekend to be in Winnemucca.

CARSON CITY - The Public Utilities Commission of Nevada is promoting Lifeline Awareness Week, Sept. 9-15. Lifeline is a government benefit program supported by the Universal Service Fund that provides a discount on phone service for qualifying low-income consumers.
