JESSICA POWELL • The Humboldt SunReaux's Creaux, consisting of teammates Rue Chitwood (center), Brittany Shober (right), Ehren Inkel (left), and Mike Beyer (not pictured), won fourth place in the Bean Master class with their chocolate cheesecake and shrimp etouffee. The cook-off Saturday at Riverview Park consisted of three classes: Bean Master, entrée and dessert, and Chuck Wagon, entrée, and the youth category. Winners for the youth category were: first place - Rory Leflar with Heaps of Hominy; second place - Burn, Finley Lefevre, with lasagna. Winners for the Bean Master class were: first place - RLM Ranch, Mindi Leflar, with chili verde and tres leches cake; second place - The Dutch Diva, Randy and Terry Bell, with pork roast with sage stuffing and three-layer carrot cake; third place - Betty and Dan Rogers with cioppino and caramel apple spice cake; and fourth place - Reaux's Creaux. Winners of the Chuck Wagon class were: first place - Team E-Bomb, Erin Hart, with beef burgundy; second place - Supernova, Alan and Lisa Davis, with jambalaya; third place - DOCO Doogles, Katie Dehlin and Jessica Powell, with High Sierra Gumbo; and fourth place - The Nogotta Ranch Cooking Crew, Bob and Pat Himmelreich, with Taste of Thanksgiving. 
WINNEMUCCA - Humboldt County commissioners will meet next Tuesday rather than their usual Monday, due to the Labor Day holiday. The meeting begins at 10 a.m. with public comment, and the administrative report.
CARSON CITY - Nevada's 30-year-old unemployment insurance system will soon be replaced with a new state-of-the art computer interface that will improve efficiency and integrity of the state's unemployment insurance benefit program, announced Renee Olson, administrator for the Employment Security Division of the Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR).

CARSON CITY - The Public Utilities Commission of Nevada has scheduled a consumer session Wednesday, Sept. 4, to hear public comment regarding NV Energy's application to adjust Northern Nevada customer rates.
RENO - The University of Nevada School of Medicine's free Student Outreach Clinics for September are scheduled for the following dates: A general clinic will be held on Sept. 14 from 8 a.m. to noon; a women's clinic will be held on Sep. 21 from 8 a.m. to noon; and a children's clinic will be held on Sept. 24 from 6 to 9 p.m.

GINNY DUFURRENA • Special to the Sun Tickets are now on sale for a beautiful quilt made by Cynthia Lee Moody. The 102-inch by 104-inch quilt is made from vintage fabrics and contains a Quilters Dream batting and muslin back. It was finished with longarm quilting done by Moody at her studio. The quilt is on display at the Humboldt County Library. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5, and are available at the library. The winner will be drawn at the Just Desserts bookmobile fundraiser on Sept. 14.
WINNEMUCCA - A lack of moisture, over an extended period of time, has caused producers in Humboldt and Lander counties to suffer from the effects of severe drought conditions. Farms and ranches experiencing severe drought conditions may be eligible for cost-share assistance under ECP. This disaster program is administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Farm Service Agency (FSA), which provides cost-share assistance if the damage is so severe that water available for livestock or orchards and vineyards has been reduced below normal to the extent that neither can survive without additional water.
