Cause of fire that scorched former Lovelock brothel still unknown

Former occupants find little to salvage

LOVELOCK - Two weeks after a fire nearly destroyed the vacant La Belle's Lounge, the Nevada Department of Public Safety's Fire Investigation Unit is still studying the cause of the suspicious blaze, according to Pershing County Fire Chief Chuck Rasco.

UNR archeologist leads excavation at historic landmark in Carson City

RENO - The University of Nevada, Reno's Department of Anthropology, in partnership with the Nevada Indian Commission and the Washoe Tribal Historic Preservation Office, is conducting an excavation at the historic Stewart Indian School in Carson City, Nev. The Stewart facility is a 110-acre historic district that is home to more than 50 historic buildings.

LOVELOCK - Exploratory drilling and the search for more gold resumed last week at the dormant Relief Canyon Mine northeast of Lovelock. The work could expand potential resources, reveal higher grades of gold ore and attract additional investment in the mine.

WINNEMUCCA - The Bureau of Land Management's Winnemucca District finished the Blue Wing Complex Emergency Wild Horse Gather on Aug. 4. A total of 203 wild horses were gathered from portions of the complex northwest of Lovelock.

CARSON CITY (AP) - The last remnants of a fortune of coins found packed in ammunition boxes in the garage of a recluse who died last summer was auctioned Tuesday for more than $3.1 million - but not before bidders got assurances they could return any of the rare $20 gold pieces that some collectors spotted as counterfeit.
