Volunteers find stewardship success in the Santa Rosas

WINNEMUCCA - Volunteers of northern Nevada came together July 27 and chose to make a difference through stewardship in the Santa Rosa Ranger District of the Humboldt Toiyabe National Forest outside Paradise Valley. Their efforts positively impacted the land as well as local wildlife in this beautiful backcountry setting.

Conservation Specialist wants local input on Sage Grouse conservation Steve Weaver part of governor's network to prevent endangered species listing

WINNEMUCCA - Visiting one-on-one with Steve Weaver, one of three conservation specialists hired through the governor's office, is an enlightening experience and one which he hopes all in our area who care about the public lands will take the time to do. Weaver's specific job is to work with area stakeholders to develop and implement projects aimed toward preventing endangered species listing for the Sage Grouse, and by so doing, help improve public lands and rangeland health.

LOVELOCK - Water quality is important in maintaining water consumption of cattle. Physio-chemical (pH, total dissolved solids, hardness, and total dissolved oxygen), organoleptic (odor and taste), compounds present in excess (nitrates, iron, sodium, sulfates, and fluorine), toxic compounds (arsenic, cyanide, lead, mercury, hydrocarbons, organochlorides and organophosphates) and bacteria are criteria for evaluating drinking water for humans and livestock.

Fire restrictions take effect Monday for certain areas in northeastern Nevada

ELKO - Effective Monday, Aug. 19, the following public-use restrictions will go into effect for the Jarbidge, Mountain City, and Ruby Mountains, Ranger Districts of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest; all BLM-managed public lands in northeastern Nevada; Nevada Division of Forestry Protection Districts in Northeastern Nevada; U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and Bureau of Indian Affairs administered lands.

"It's very important for you to know that Winnemucca does honor its citizens, and we are very proud of our service people and our veterans who've been in the war," she said. Several local Korean War veterans (left) were in attendance at the meeting and received standing applause as the mayor shook their hands.
