Winnemucca resident Rosalyn Katzenmeyer brought her 1947 Ford Fodor to the first Winnemucca downtown cruise of the summer season on May 9. The fully customized Ford was one of many nice rides lining Bridge Street during the evening. Cruises used to be a regular feature, but then went away, and now they are back once a month on Thursday night. The next cruise night in Winnemucca will take place on June 6.
During the week of April 29 - May 2, McDermitt Elementary School celebrated Nevada Reading Week. The theme this year was "Dream It, Believe it, Do It." On Wednesday, May 1, the students listened to high school students and McDermitt school staff read from their favorite books.
TONOPAH - Back in 1900, a prospector named Jim Butler struck silver while searching for his lost burro in the area that soon became Tonopah.
WINNEMUCCA - Nevada Department of Transportation employee Amanda Heuett earned her class A commercial driver's license May 10.  
Kelly Pinkston (McDermitt guidance counselor and GEARUP adviser) and Stacy Ramsey (GEARUP SPIF) teamed up with Trixie Byron (Fort McDermitt Tribe education specialist) to plan and implement a career/college fair on May 7. A total of 24 colleges and businesses participated in McDermitt's career/college fair at the McDermitt community center. Students in grades 7-12 from McDermitt school and Orovada school attended the career/college fair. In addition, community members and others attended. Organizers said the fair was very successful and they plan to have one next school year as well.
CARSON CITY - The Bureau of Land Management, the Nevada Department of Agriculture and the Nevada Department of Corrections on Saturday, May 18, hosted the second of three annual saddle-trained horse adoption events at the Northern Nevada Correctional Center (NNCC) in Carson City.
WINNEMUCCA - Four Lowry High School students brought home four medals from this year's state SkillsUSA competition in Reno.
WINNEMUCCA - Lowry High School qualified to send a team of two students to the statewide auto shop competition held in Reno May 8 and 9. The two juniors were Anthony Manzo and Courtney Decker.
CARSON CITY - Emergency response leaders from rural and frontier counties of Nevada will gather at the Fallon Convention Center May 30-31 for a Public Health Rural Emergency Preparedness Summit.
CARSON CITY - The Nevada Division of Insurance's new website (doi.nv.gov.) provides Nevada consumers with comprehensive information about insurance and healthcare reform in Nevada. Members of the insurance industry will also find a wealth of information about doing business in Nevada.

Lowry High School's concert choir and concert band performed for the last time this school year on May 16. Music teacher Paul Criddle said the groups had a good year, worked hard and worked well together as groups. He noted that both groups performed at the Anaheim, Calif., music festival. The band took first place, and the choir won second place.
WINNEMUCCA -Staff members at Humboldt General Hospital said goodbye last month to a longtime local nurse.
WINNEMUCCA - The "Frugal Flamingo" will be closed for the Memorial Day weekend.
