As the crow flies, I was only several miles outside Carson City but I was miles from the closest trailhead. With pandemic-era public benefits ending and high prices on groceries, officials are sounding the alarm about a growing number of Nevada seniors going hungry. CEO Beth Martino of food security nonprofit Three Square and Marie Baxter with Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada said a reduction of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) — or food stamp — benefits as well as inflation are contributing to the post-pandemic increase in food insecurity among the state’s older residents.
From record heat in Las Vegas to fires burning 138 acres in Sparks, Nevadans statewide were reminded this month that summers are becoming longer and hotter. After wildfires in Nevada burned just 1,305 acres last year — the lowest in the state’s recorded history — forecasters fear dry conditions in the next couple months will make this year a much different story. With less precipitation than normal across much of the Great Basin in June, a prolonged heat wave, and fields of flammable grasses helped along by a wet spring, most of northern and western Nevada and portions of southern Nevada are at greater risk of widespread wildfires from July through August.

The tri-town swim competition between Lovelock, Yerington and Hawthorne is heating up. Last Saturday, the season kicked off in Yerington with Lovelock competing against Yerington's Desert Fish.
The Winnemucca Junior All-Stars went a perfect 3-0 last week at the District 3 Tournament in Elko.
Lowry High School sophomore Txema Bengochea was named to Northern 3A East second team at shortstop and an honorable mention choice in the Northern 3A for his play this year. In 25 games this season, Bengochea hit .279, with 19 hits, 12 runs scored, three RBI and a double.

One way the PCHS wrestling program makes the most of its off-season is through summer wrestling camps. Coach Mike Brooks says they give the wrestlers experiences to improve their skills.
A pair of Lowry High School senior finished out their softball career by being named to the Northern 3A all-league first team and 3A all-state team. Savannah Stoker, who set the all-time Nevada home run record with 53 and finished third on the all-time RBI list with 214 was named the Northern 3A East Player of the Year.
