Lowry High School’s Jhett Harper has high hopes of continuing his wrestling career at the college level and while the Buckaroos were in Lovelock for the Lovelock Invitational, Harber was in Reno this past weekend for the Reno Tournament of Champions.
Lunches are served each weekday at noon and soup and croutons is served at 11 a.m. the Pleasant Senior Center, 1480 Lay Street. Lunches are open to the public. Suggested minimum donation is $4 for seniors age 60 and older. Visitors must be 16 years or older. Their meal is $10. Hot soup at croutons served daily with meal. Low-fat milk available daily. Safety of food after it has been served & taken from the center is the responsibility of the consumer.
WALKER RIVER — The Bureau of Land Management today announced the withdrawal of lands around Walker Lake and transfer that land into trust for the Walker River Indian Reservation. A Secretary’s Order dated Nov. 26, 1906, set aside all lands within one mile of the lake’s high-water mark for the Bureau of Reclamation’s Truckee-Carson Project.

RENO, NV — As of December 17, snow water equivalent (SWE) measurements in northern Nevada and the Eastern Sierra are above average, with snowpack ranging from 106% to 157% of the median for this time of year, according to experts with the Natural Resources Conservation Service. This is a positive sign for water availability in the region as the winter season progresses.
RENO, NV — The USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has issued new federal orders to enhance testing and surveillance for the H5N1 variant of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in U.S. dairy herds. This decision comes following recent detections of the virus in dairy cows across 16 states, including Nevada, and aims to strengthen livestock biosecurity measures.
The McDermitt High School girls basketball team continued its winning ways, this time way down in southern Nevada. The Lady Bulldogs traveled to Beatty for the Beatty Bash.
The Batlle Mountain High School wrestling team made the short trip to Winnemucca this past weekend for the annual Cody Louk Invitational at the Winnemucca Event Center. Liam Bundrock brought back the 138-pound title and Wyatt Madalena was the runner-up at 157 pounds.
The Pershing County High School boys basketball had a Northern 2A win and two league losses this past week. The Mustangs beat Coral Academy of Science in Reno 74-16. This past Friday at home, Pershing County lost to 54-50 to Battle Mountain. The weekend closed out with a 79-49 loss to West Wendover on Saturday afternoon.
It has been a few years but now you can see some smiles coming from the McDermitt High School boys basketball team. After having this weekend’s Super 8 Classic in Susanville canceled, the Bulldogs traveled to Beatty Bash, where they got five games in over two days.
It was a mixed bag of results for the Lowry High School girls basketball team, who faced a pair of Northern 3A West schools in crossover play. The games do not count for the league standings. Lowry started red hot against South Tahoe on Friday night in Winnemucca, leading by as many as 17 points in the opening quarter, eventually winning 54-39. It was a quick turnaround, as Lowry boarded the bus on Saturday morning to for Reno play North Valleys.
If there is anything we have learned in the first two weeks of the season, the Lowry High School boys basketball team is going to be a fun group to watch. With new coach Brandon Eastman and long-time assistant Dave Schwartz helping, the Buckaroos have shown new excitement on the floor, after struggling the past few years to find a cohesive unit. That was no different last week, as Lowry took on three Northern 3A West opponents.
