Nevada’s “green bank” is now looking to distribute $156 million in federal funds to help thousands of low-income households benefit from solar power, whether they own property or not. While rooftop solar has exploded in popularity, high upfront costs and physical constraints have prevented lower-income residents and renters from reaping the benefits of low-cost solar power. One solution enabled by the Inflation Reduction Act – the largest U.S. investment in clean energy ever – directs solar financing to governments, nonprofits, and businesses willing to share at least half of their solar energy gains with low-income households in exchange for millions in upfront financing.

RENO — “Fragile and at-risk” is how Nevada’s public health infrastructure could be described based on the findings of a recent assessment conducted by University of Nevada, Reno Extension, in partnership with the Nevada Association of Counties. The assessment, which maps the public health infrastructure in 15 of 17 counties in Nevada (excluding the two most urban counties, Clark and Washoe), provides baseline data for decision-makers and stakeholders as they consider the needs of their communities.
The Lowry High School wrestling team will host a dual with Fernley, Battle Mountain and possibly Pershing County on Wednesday, Jan. 8, in the high school gym.
The calendar may have just turned to 2025 but the Nevada high school wrestling season is heading into its final stretch with the state championships on the horizon on Feb. 7-8. Lowry High School was part of the 96-team Sierra Nevada Classic held last week at the Reno Events Center.
The McDermitt High School girls basketball team escaped Nevada following Christmas to play in the West Coast Jamboree in Dublin, Calif. Dublin is just west of San Francisco and the tournament has 13 different brackets for 104 different schools.
It was a rollercoaster of the day for the three-time reigning 3A state champion Lowry girls basketball team. Damonte Ranch made a visit to Winnemucca this past Saturday and the scrappy Mustangs gave the Lady Bucks everything they wanted and more. Damonte Ranch, who came into the game winless at 0-10, led throughout the second and third quarters, when Lowry rallied for a 59-49 win.
BAKER — The Great Basin National Park Foundation has secured $110,000 in funding from the National Park Foundation to expand its educational programs and increase the capacity of the nonprofit organization. The grants will support the foundation's strategic growth and fund a new pilot educational program focused on engaging middle and high school students with the natural world.

ELKO, NV — Great Basin College (GBC) has been awarded nearly $1 million in federal funding to expand its distance learning capabilities and improve access to higher education for rural residents of Nevada. The grant, provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Distance Learning and Telemedicine (DLT) program, will enable the college to enhance its interactive video technologies and establish new locations to better connect students across its 86,500-square-mile service area.
In the spring and summer of 2025, visitors can expect to see some dramatic additions to the Marzen House Museum on 25 Marzen Lane in Lovelock. In 1874, Colonel Joseph Marzen built the two-story farmhouse that bears his name. One hundred and fifty years later, it is one of Pershing County’s most popular attractions, drawing visitors from 28 states and nine countries.
As the Lowry High School boys basketball team headed into the Christmas break, the Buckaroos faced three teams that you normally do not see on the schedule. All three contests were non-conference, with Lowry hosting Battle Mountain for the first time in more than a decade on Tuesday, Dec. 17. The Buckaroos overcame a six-point halftime deficit to beat the Longhorns 65-53.
The Pershing County High School girls basketball team won two league games on the road this past week. The first, against Oasis Academy in Fallon, couldn’t have been any closer 46-45. The second win, against Sierra Lutheran was a more decisive 43-15. Heading into Christmas break, the girls stand at 7-2 overall, and 4-1 in the 2A. Their only league loss so far has been against their rival school, Battle Mountain.
Two of the perennial top teams in Nevada were battling out for first place again, this time this past Saturday at the Lovelock Invitational at Pershing County High School. The Lowry High School wrestling team has won 16 state championships, second most in state history.
