Pershing County girls thump Dayton in home non-conference match-up

A couple of days after Christmas, the Pershing County High School girls basketball team beat the visiting Dayton Dust Devils 52-20 in a non-conference match-up. The bleachers were lighter than usual with the high school on winter break until Jan. 6. Nonetheless, the Mustangs showed off their defensive and offensive chops.

‘Salute to Service’ night to honor those who serve

A “Salute to Service” night coinciding with the Nevada-Air Force basketball game on Jan. 14 will honor all military, first responders and law enforcement agencies at Lawlor Events Center. The event follows a salute to the military on Nov. 2 when the Wilf Pack hosted Colorado State on Nov. 2.

Lowry boys finish third at Rail City Classic in Sparks

It was a short Christmas break for the Lowry High School boys basketball team, who wrapped up non-conference play last week with a third-place finish at the Rail City Classic at Sparks High School. The Buckaroos won three of their four games over the three-day tournament to improve to 5-7 overall.

Tri-County sends three teams to state basketball

Late February was a good month for the Lowry High School, McDermitt High School and Pershing County High School girls basketball teams. The Lowry girls rallied for its third consecutive state title and ninth overall with a 61-56 over Fernley. The McDermitt girls reached the state title game in the 1A division and Pershing County played in the 2A tournament.

BLM completes EA for solar project near Lovelock

LOVELOCK, Nev. –The Bureau of Land Management today issued a Final Environmental Assessment for the Sierra Solar Utilities Project. The project would cross approximately 55 acres of public lands in Churchill County to connect the proposed Sierra Solar facility to the electric grid. If approved, NV Energy would be authorized to construct, operate, maintain, and eventually decommission two 345-kilovolt gen-tie transmission lines, buried collector lines, and a new access road on public lands.

The 2025 NDAA benefits Northern Nevada installations

Northern Nevada benefitted from Wednesday’s passage of the 2025 National Defense Authorization Act with Naval Air Station Fallon and the Hawthorne Army Depot receiving funding to enhance the training at the two installations. The $985 billion bill now goes to the president’s desk for his signature. The NDAA authorizes $48.3 million as part of the Fallon Range Training Complex modernization to pay ranchers for their land permits.

BLM allocates $1.79 million wildfire risk mitigation

RENO — The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Nevada has committed $1.79 million to support wildfire risk reduction efforts across the state through the Wildland Fire Community Assistance Program. The funding, made possible by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, will help local fire departments, counties, and non-profit organizations implement fuels management projects aimed at reducing wildfire risks to communities.
