PLEASANT CENTER MENU for Jan.16-22

Lunches are served each weekday at noon and soup and croutons is served at 11 a.m. the Pleasant Senior Center, 1480 Lay Street. Lunches are open to the public. Suggested minimum donation is $4 for seniors age 60 and older. Visitors must be 16 years or older. Their meal is $10. Hot soup at croutons served daily with meal. Low-fat milk available daily. Safety of food after it has been served & taken from the center is the responsibility of the consumer.

Lowry knocked off by Elko in league opener

After having its original league opener postponed on Friday, the Lowry High School boys basketball team opened Northern 3A East play on Saturday afternoon in Elko. The Indians pulled away in the second half for a 60-39 win. The Buckaroos took an early 15-13 lead after eight minutes of play, with all the points coming off 3-pointers.

Lady Longhorns improve to 6-1

After having 11 days off over Christmas break, the Battle Mountain High School girls basketball team jumped back into the fire with three games in consecutive days last week. The Lady Longhorns improved to 11-2 overall and 6-1 in league play after picking up a 38-37 overtime win on the road at West Wendover on Thursday, a 63-18 victory over Silver Stage and a 36-12 win over Sierra Lutheran at home on Saturday.

Domagala inducted into Nevada chapter of National Wrestling Hall of Fame

Longtime Battle Mountain and Tonopah wrestling coach Mitch Domagala was one of six coaches inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Nevada chapter. The ceremony took place at the Silver Legacy. The induction was held in part with the Reno Tournament of Champions.

Harber brings back 175-pound title from Rollie Lane Invitational

It had been 13 years since a Lowry High School wrestler won an individual championship at the Rollie Lane Invitational. In 2012, the Buckaroos saw Ryan Nelson, Jace Billingsley and Michael Billingsley win, as did Lowry as a team.

Battle Mountain man killed in Lamoille Canyon avalanche

ELKO — On Dec. 28, 2024 at approximately 11:45 a.m., Devon Barton, 30 years of age from Battle Mountain, was riding a “Timbersled” with his family. Barton was riding near the Dollar Lakes in Lamoille Canyon and was trapped under the snow when he was caught in an avalanche.

As Nevada heads into the winter months, the state’s water reserves will largely depend on the amount of precipitation and snowmelt that hits the state over the next several months. Snow water amounts across northern Nevada and the Eastern Sierra, a major water source for Lake Tahoe, are above normal and range from 106% to 157% of median for this time of year.

BLM seeks input on proposed land sale to speed Anaconda mine cleanup

CARSON CITY, Nev. – The Bureau of Land Management is seeking public input on the proposed sale of 2,062 acres of public lands within the Anaconda Mine Site in Lyon County to Atlantic Richfield Company in order to facilitate clean-up activities at the site.

The White House is cracking down on overdraft fees

NEW YORK (AP) — The Biden administration has finalized a rule limiting overdraft fees banks can charge, as part of the White House's campaign to reduce junk fees that hit consumers on everyday purchases, including banking services. President Joe Biden had called the fees, which can be as high as $35, “exploitative,” while the banking industry has lobbied extensively to keep the existing fee structures in place.

Nevada 4H State Expo wraps up

The Nevada 4-H State Expo was held this past fall at the Rafter 3C Arena and the Fallon Trap Club. Nearly 200 youth from across the state partici-pated in the year’s culminating event. The road to the Expo was long, as youth had to qualify for their con-test(s) or with their project(s) at a local or regional event before the expo.
