Lady Bulldogs cruise in league openers

Fresh off four wins and a tournament championship at the Christmas Classic in Reno, the McDermitt High School girls basketball team remained red hot, with two easy home wins over Jackpot and Wells to start Eastern 1A play. In its first home game of the season, McDermitt overcame a slow start against Jackpot but held the Jaguars to just five points in the final three quarters to win 61-11.

When titans collide

When the two top teams in the 2A compete, you expect fireworks. That’s what happened Friday night at the girls’ varsity game in Lovelock. North Tahoe’s Lady Lakers beat the Pershing County High School girls basketball team 31-28, bringing the Mustangs’ long winning streak to a halt. Pershing County now stands at 12-1 overall and 5-1 in the 2A northern league.

Lowry wrestlers travel to Idaho, Sparks

The Lowry High School wrestling team split up its team this past weekend, sending a group to Idaho for the Rollie Lane Invitational and another to Sparks for the Sparks Invitational. The Rollie Lane Invitational is one of the best tournaments in the west featuring 90 teams for a number of different states.

Pershing County wrestlers make strong showing at Sparks Invitational tournament

The Pershing County High School wrestling team continues to thrive. Last weekend, over a dozen athletes competed in the Sparks Invitational tournament. Their combined efforts helped Pershing finish fourth out of 19 teams.

Longhorns boys rout Nighthawks, Falcons

The Battle Mountain High School boys basketball team improved to 5-2 in the Northern 2A with two impressive wins over Silver Stage (71-23) and Sierra Lutheran (79-31) this past weekend at home.

LHS boys fall to Spring Creek, Elko

After playing its first 14 games on the road that ranged from Elko to Susanville, Calif, to South Lake Tahoe and Mesquite, the Lowry High School boys basketball team finally saw its home floor for game action this past weekend.

BMHS wrestlers travel to Idaho

The Battle Mountain High School wrestling team sent two teams to Idaho this past weekend. One group went to the Buhl Invitational and finished 15th in the team standings with 38 points.

Lowry girls open league play with big wins over Spring Creek, Elko

For just the second and third time this season, the Lowry High School girls basketball team was on its home floor. The Lady Bucks opened Northern 3A East play with a 51-14 win over Spring Creek on Thursday and a 70-42 victory against Elko on Saturday afternoon. Lowry improved to 2-0 in league play and 12-4 overall.

Free radon test kits available now from UNR Extension

RENO – January is National Radon Action Month, and University of Nevada, Reno Extension’s Nevada Radon Education Program is offering free short-term radon test kits to Nevadans from now through Feb. 29, while supplies last. Radon test kits are available statewide at Extension offices and partner locations. Radon is a naturally occurring, radioactive gas that is colorless, odorless and tasteless. It comes from the ground and can accumulate in homes and buildings, raising the risk of lung cancer. This risk is 100% preventable. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates 21,000 Americans die each year from radon-caused lung cancer, killing more people than secondhand smoke, drunk driving and house fires.

Care Flight’s fixed-wing program returns to service

RENO – Care Flight-REMSA Health paused service of the Care Flight fixed-wing aircraft program following the medical transport plane crash that occurred Friday, Feb. 24, 2023 outside of Stagecoach, Nevada. With tremendous support from the community, the entire Care Flight-REMSA Health team continues to navigate the loss of the five lives onboard.

Humboldt General Hospital celebrates first baby of the new year: Meet Kinsley Reign

WINNEMUCCA — Humboldt General Hospital is delighted to announce the arrival of the first baby born in the new year, Kinsley Reign, born to proud parents Gracie Wells and Michael Beitman of Winnemucca. Kinsley, a beautiful 7-pound baby girl measuring 19 inches, made her entrance into the world on Jan. 2, at 5:14 a.m. The parents, overjoyed by the birth of their daughter, came up with the name Kinsley Reign, which they feel is pretty and uniquely hers.
