US wildlife service considering endangered status for tiny snail near Thacker's lithium mine

RENO, Nev. (AP) — Federal wildlife officials have agreed to conduct a full, year-long review to determine whether a tiny snail found only in high-desert springs near a huge lithium mine being built along the Nevada-Oregon line should be listed as a threatened or endangered species. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said in a finding published Thursday in the Federal Register that enough scientific exists to warrant the review sought by environmentalists who say that groundwater pumping required for the operation of the Thacker Pass mine could push the Kings River pyrg to the brink of extinction.

The U.S. Drought Monitor on Tuesday listed western Nevada as “abnormally dry” despite early February storms. “Abnormally dry” is the lowest level of the five-tiered system used to rank the severity of a drought.

Last Tuesday was a milestone for the Pershing County High School girls basketball team. Silver Stage visited PCHS on senior night, the last home game of the year. The Mustangs beat the Nighthawks 55-23.

PCHS boys ends regular season with two wins

The Pershing County Mustangs basketball team ended their regular season last week with two league wins. On Tuesday, they hosted Silver Stage for senior night, defeating them 60-25. On Friday the Mustangs traveled to Fallon to beat Oasis Academy (53-40). The Mustangs came out strong against the Nighthawks.They were determined to see their seniors off with a win.

PCHS sending 11 wrestlers to state championships

This past Saturday, the PCHS gym saw all-day wrestling action. Pershing County hosted the NIAA Class 2A Northern Region zone championship. The Mustangs qualified 11 wrestlers for the state tournament, scheduled for Feb. 16 in Bullhead City, Ariz.

Battle Mountain wrestlers claim Northern 2A Regional title

If you heard this one before, here you go again — the Battle Mountain High School wrestling team is the Northern 2A champions once again. It was a little closer than in the past, as Battle Mountain won with 180.5 points, followed by Yerington (167), Pershing County (149), Coral Academy (113.5) and Eureka (84).

Coaches usually say freshmen are not freshmen when you get this late in the season. The Battle Mountain High School boys basketball team came into this year with a very young team of four freshen and two sophomores. There are just three seniors on the squad.
