McDermitt track and field team begins season in Dayton, Yerington

The McDermitt High School track and field team has its first two meets of the season under its belt with strong performances from its athletes. On Friday, March 7, the squad traveled to Dayton for the Dust Devil Invite. Junior Shandon Camas posted a personal best in the shot put to win the event with a throw of 45 feet, 4.5 inches. He placed third in the discus with a toss of 129-8. AJ Farmer posted a seventh-place finish in the shot put (34-10) and 10th in the discus (94-0) and freshman Trevor Smart placed 11th in the shot put (32-11.5) and 14th in the discus.

Bulldogs split with Vandals, Mustangs; still in the hunt for playoff berth

The McDermitt High School boys basketball team remained in the hunt for a postseason berth in the 1A East after splitting a pair of road games this past weekend. McDermitt traveled to Eureka and lost 59-43 to the Vandals but bounced back on Saturday afternoon with a 51-46 victory over Lund to improve to 3-5 in league play and 8-8 overall.

McDermitt girls improve to 4-0 in 1A East action

The McDermitt High School girls basketball team maintained its lead in the 1A East with a pair of road wins this past weekend. The Lady Bulldogs defeated Jackpot 73-0 on Friday night and faced a much better opponent on Saturday, edging out a 52-28 win over Wells on Saturday afternoon.

The McDermitt High School girls basketball team escaped Nevada following Christmas to play in the West Coast Jamboree in Dublin, Calif. Dublin is just west of San Francisco and the tournament has 13 different brackets for 104 different schools.

The amount of teacher vacancies left within the Humboldt County School District (HCSD) for the 2024-2025 school year has dwindled from the double digits to just four as of July 25. Unfortunately, three of the four are at the remote rural school McDermitt Combined School in the core subjects English and Science, as well as the position of social worker.

The McDermitt High School track and field team was in Middleton, Idaho, this past Friday for the Middleton Invite. Loni Tobey finished 29th in the discus with a personal-best throw of 67 feet, 10 inches.
