The Pershing County track team had a week off from competition. They go back to Battle Mountain on Saturday, May 22, to compete in the NIAA Northern 2A Regional Championship at Eleanor Lemaire Junior High School. The first event begins at noon.
Three of the four baseball games the Pershing County High School baseball team played over the weekend were close. The Mustangs were ahead or tied at several points. On Friday, Pershing County hosted West Wendover. The Wolverines won both games of the doubleheader (16-1, 10-7).
The Pershing County High School softball team hosted the West Wendover Wolverines for a doubleheader on Friday afternoon. The Mustangs won both games (16-12, 10-1). On Saturday, the Mustangs welcomed Smith Valley for a non-league matchup. A thunderstorm ended the first game of the doubleheader after the fifth inning, with Lovelock trailing 14-12. Officials scrapped the second game as thunder cracked and lightning lit up the sky.
The Pershing County softball team went 1-2 for the week. Tuesday, they traveled to Battle Mountain and lost 7-3 to the undefeated Longhorns. The momentum shifted for the Mustangs over the weekend on their home field. They beat the Incline Highlanders on Saturday with scores of 12-11 and 17-6.
The PCHS baseball team played three games this week. On Tuesday, May 4, they traveled to Battle Mountain and lost 9-1. It was Pershing County’s second loss of the season against the Longhorns. On Saturday, the Mustangs hosted the Incline Highlanders. Pershing’s ballplayers lost both games (15-9, 5-16) but remain in good spirits as the season winds down. Within weeks, seven Mustangs throw down their bats and graduate. The rest hope to return next year for a regular season of high school baseball, one of Lovelock’s most loved sports.
They’re headed for the finish line. The Pershing County track team competed in the Battle Mountain Invitational on Friday, May 7. “The meet was fun for the athletes,” said Coach Matt Fuller. “A few set personal records.” He and Cassidie Fuller stepped up as coaches this season. Matt Fuller also coached the soccer team through yet another successful year.
The Battle Mountain High School finished up a season sweep of rival Pershing County on Tuesday, May 4, with a 10-1 victory and split a home doubleheader with Silver Stage, winning game one 8-2 and losing the nightcap 8-1. The Longhorns are now 6-4 in league play and 7-5 overall.
The 2021 season continues to play hardball with the Pershing County baseball team. On Tuesday, April 27, Pershing County hosted Battle Mountain, losing 33-3.
The Lowry High School baseball faced a tough test this past week, playing a three-game series in four days against an undefeated Dayton squad. All three games were played in Dayton, as Lowry hosted a track meet on Saturday and the Dust Devils were not able to travel to Winnemucca on Friday.
It appears the 3A East boys championship this year is a toss up between the six schools every week. After winning in Fallon, the Lowry High School boys placed fourth this past Thursday at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course in Stateline. Beautiful weather greeted the golfers on one of the best courses in Nevada.
This past Friday,, the PCHS Track team headed to the Ward Coates Invitational at Elko High School. Athletes from several schools met on the track. They included Pershing County, Battle Mountain, Carlin, McDermitt, Eureka, Jackpot, Lund, Owyhee, Round Mountain, Wells, West Wendover and White Pine.
On Wednesday, April 21, PCHS hosted awards night in the auditorium. As a sign of the times, the athletes pumped sanitizer on their hands after each handshake. However, last year’s ceremony was virtual, so people felt lucky to gather on the stage. JV volleyball coach Nancy Meissner recognized Katie Moore as her most improved player. She named Anna Happy MVP. Varsity volleyball coach Monica Halverson gave her Heart and Hustle Award to Aledda Sam. Cheyeanne Diaz won the Coach’s Award. Presley Burrows earned the Mustang Award.
It was a tough week for the Pershing County High School softball team. On Saturday, the girls traveled to Silver Springs to play the Silver Stage Nighthawks. Pershing County lost both games, 11-1 and 13-8.
Saturday, the Pershing County baseball team recorded its first win of the 2021 season on the road against Silver Stage. The Mustangs lost the first game of the doubleheader (11-2) but came back to win the second (12-11). Tuesday, Lovelock hosted Battle Mountain. Results were not available at press time.
This past Friday, Lovelock hosted the Pershing County Invitational, the track team’s 2021 season-opener. As afternoon turned to evening, a timekeeper headed to her car for a jacket. “We’re not here for a long time- we’re here for a good time,” she quipped. And that’s what it was for the volunteers, fans and athletes from Pershing County, Battle Mountain, Coral Academy, Silver Stage and Yerington. Lyon and Lander County school buses parked in the lot.
