Basketball camp rebounds

Recently, 100 pre-K through third-graders shared a cherished tradition – Future Mustangs Basketball Camp. Later in the week, 40 fourth through eighth-graders met in the high school gym to play one of Lovelock’s favorite sports. “We had more campers than we have ever had, I think,” said organizer and Coach Lee Houston.

Flag football under the lights

Committed coaches watch out for their kids all year, even after school lets out. That’s why Pershing County High School athletic director Mike Brooks began offering Flag Football Under the Lights a couple of summers ago. “I came up with it to give the kids in Lovelock something to do on summer nights,” he says. “I wanted to give them a chance to be active and develop some football skills.” 

Wolf Pack trio named to preseason award watch lists

Watch List Season 2021 got underway Monday morning, and three members of the Wolf Pack found their names called on the Maxwell Award powered by Mammoth Tech and Bednarik Award powered by Mammoth Tech Preseason Watch Lists. Quarterback Carson Strong and wide receiver Romeo Doubs were named to the watch list of the Maxwell Award, given annually to the nation’s College Player of the Year.

Pentagon chief allows Naval Academy grad to pursue NFL job

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said Tuesday that the U.S. military will allow Naval Academy graduate Cameron Kinley to pursue a career in the NFL with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Wolf Pack well-represented on PFF, Phil Steele Preseason All-Mountain West teams

Nevada Football has continued to rack up the preseason honors ahead of the 2021 campaign, landing a total of 33 selections, including 15 to the first teams, on the Phil Steele and Pro Football Focus (PFF) Preseason All-Mountain West Teams. The Pack’s 15 selections to the Phil Steele Preseason All-Mountain West Team shared the conference lead with Boise State and San Jose State, but its eight first-team selections far out-paced the field, being twice that of the next-best program (Fresno State, with four). On the PFF teams, Nevada led the way in both overall selections (19) and first-team nods (seven).

Lovelock softball league thrives

The Weekend Warriors lost a lot of battles over the years. According to Lovelock Softball Association president Jared Jensen, “The Warriors have been playing since our first season (2018). The first few years, they struggled.”  Last season they finished below league champs Thick N Wild, the Swingers, Sandlot Junkies, Outkast, Brew Crew, Swamp Donkeys and Thunder Ducks. But that’s all changed.

Zach Johnson tests positive, list of British Open WDs grows

Former champion Zach Johnson tested positive for the coronavirus before getting on a charter flight to the British Open, forcing him to join the growing list of withdrawals and ending his streak at playing 69 consecutive majors. The R&A said Johnson, who played in the John Deere Classic in Illinois on Sunday, and local qualifier Louis de Jager of South Africa had positive COVID-19 tests and withdrew.

Silver State International Rodeo wraps up stay in Winnemucca

The Silver State International Rodeo concluded last week in Winnemucca after a weeks worth of performance for high school and junior high contestants. Contestants who finished fifth through 25th in an event during the season was eligible to compete in Winnemucca. Contestants as far away as Oklahoma made the trip to Nevada. Up next is the season finale and the National High School Finals Rodeo in Lincoln, Nebraska from July 18-24.  

Analysis: Suns’ worst-to-first turnaround is nearly complete

The seeds for this were planted nearly a year ago. The Phoenix Suns were in the middle of their eight-game unbeaten run inside the bubble at Walt Disney World last summer when someone asked coach Monty Williams if it was fun to be the feel-good story of the event. His answer was telling.

PCHS football and soccer ready for 2021-2022 seasons

As the calendar hits July, the fall sports season for the Pershing County High School football and girls soccer teams are just around the corner.  Soccer starts with a treat for the home crowd — a preseason tournament the weekend of Aug. 27-28. Starting times are still to be announced.

Get ready for full season of volleyball

“Our fall schedule is hot off the press,” says coach Monica Halverson, Pershing County's head volleyball coach since 2019. “I don’t see many changes to come, but always be prepared. Isn’t a full schedule in the fall a glorious sight?” The 2021-22 year starts with two preseason tournaments, a chance for the athletes to identify their strengths and weaknesses. On  Aug. 20-21, the players compete in Yerington. 

Strong named among Top 25 QBs of 2021

Nevada quarterback Carson Strong was named to The Sporting News’ “Top 25 QBs of 2021” list, checking in at No. 15. Strong, the only Mountain West quarterback to make the list, is coming off a 2020 campaign in which he was named the conference’s Offensive Player of the Year and to its First Team.

Holiday Bowl finds new home at baseball’s Petco Park

The Holiday Bowl will move downtown to Petco Park after its home of 42 years, Qualcomm Stadium, was razed. Holiday Bowl CEO Mark Neville confirmed the move. He and officials from the San Diego Padres will unveil renderings of how the ballpark will accommodate a football field.  No date has been set for the 2021 game, which will be the first in a new five-year contract between the Pac-12 and ACC. Neville began looking at Petco Park as an option since it became apparent that Qualcomm Stadium’s lifespan was coming to an end after the NFL’s Chargers moved to Los Angeles following the 2016 season.

Williams says she will not play at the Tokyo Olympics

Serena Williams said she will not go to the Tokyo Olympics, but did not want to say why during her pre-Wimbledon video conference with reporters Sunday. “I’m actually not on the Olympic list. ... Not that I’m aware of. If so, then I shouldn’t be on it,” Williams said. The 39-year-old Williams has won four gold medals at past Summer Games for the United States: in both singles and doubles at the 2012 London Olympics — which held the tennis competition at the All England Club — and in doubles at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and 2008 Beijing Olympics. All of her doubles golds were won with her older sister, Venus, as her partner.
