Nevada quarterback Carson Strong was named to his fourth preseason watch list of the summer, being tabbed a candidate for the Manning Award. Ahead of the 2021 campaign, Strong has already been named a candidate for the Maxwell Award, Davey O’Brien Award, and CFPA National Performer of the Year Trophy.
The Lovelock Volunteer Fire Department sponsored the annual Frontier’s Day bike races on Sunday afternoon. Chief Rodney Wilcox and his helpers officiated, lining up dozens of helmeted racers at the starting line. It was all over in a flash as the speedy youth careened down Elmhurst Avenue. Former racer Lily Burt encouraged her little sister, Abigail, racing for the first time. Honor student Lily begins high school this fall.
The Frontier Day’s competitors agree that the most challenging part of a tractor pull is to get the thing going. However, on Sunday afternoon, they hauled the machines down Elmhurst Avenue as fast as they could. Some almost appeared to trot.
Dozens of Lovelock families met on Elmhurst Avenue on Sunday afternoon, the last day of Frontier Days weekend. They came to watch the weight carry, tractor pull and youth bike races. Many would compete for cash prizes. People commented on the weather. The temperature hovered in the low nineties, but Elmhurst is known for its shade trees Besides, the heatwave had passed and a gentle breeze comforted everyone.
There’s nothing like a three-peat. The Lovelock Softball Association held its fourth league championship tournament on July 29. Thick N Wild walked away with their third consecutive title.

Ann-Marie Fenner brought the Northern Nevada Gymkhana Club to Lovelock’s rodeo grounds in 2017. The membership lost out on the 2020 season because of the pandemic.
Teamwork pays. Pershing County’s 4-H coordinator Colby Burke recently collaborated with high school coaches Jared Jensen and Jesse Canchola to bring the Major League University to Lovelock. As a result, over 80 Lovelock girls and boys had a productive and fun midsummer weekend. The MLU baseball and softball clinics took place at two of Lovelock’s most scenic spots – the high school baseball field and McDougal Park. Many of the four through eight-year-olds at McDougal picked up a bat for the first time. “The goal with the younger group was to make softball and baseball fun as well as teaching the game,” said Jensen. “The kids learned some great skills from knowledgeable coaches.”
This Thursday, the Lovelock Softball Association names its 2021 league championship team. The title game starts at 8 p.m. at McDougal Park.
The high school rodeo season came to a close on Saturday night as the National High School Finals Rodeo concluded its week stay at the Lancaster Event Center in Lincoln, Neb. A handful of Humboldt County and Battle Mountain club members took part in the event. Humboldt County’s Billy DeLong competed in three events. He finished 29th in the nation with 275 points. In his first performance, he scored 137 points, which was good enough for sixth and 37th in the first go-around.
Three Nevada players were named to the Biletnikoff Award Watch List Thursday morning, as wide receivers Romeo Doubs and Elijah Cooks, and tight end Cole Turner were tabbed candidates for college football’s award for top receiver. The three candidates for the Wolf Pack led all schools in the country on the list, and continues a first week of watch list reveals which has featured plenty of Nevada presence.
Barring a dramatic change of direction, Texas and Oklahoma are moving toward taking the Red River Rivalry to the Southeastern Conference in a seismic shift that will have repercussions in college sports from coast to coast. According to multiple reports, the first and significant formal step of the process could come as soon as Monday with the two schools informing the Big 12 they will not renew the contractual agreement that binds conference members until 2025.
Last weekend, the Lovelock Speedway had its first nights of racing in two years. On Friday, Heather Bonderer, from Battle Mountain, registered about 25 drivers at the pit gate while her son Eric, 4, played nearby. On Saturday night, everyone came back for more. “It takes a lot of people to get a race going, including volunteers, officials, drivers and their pit crews,” said Bonderer. The spectators and racers enjoyed the balmy weather and almost-full, red moon. Drivers from Susanville, Fallon, Winnemucca, Silver Springs and Lovelock raced in the season-openers.
Watch List Season 2021 got underway Monday morning, and three members of the Wolf Pack found their names called on the Maxwell Award powered by Mammoth Tech and Bednarik Award powered by Mammoth Tech Preseason Watch Lists. Quarterback Carson Strong and wide receiver Romeo Doubs were named to the watch list of the Maxwell Award, given annually to the nation’s College Player of the Year.
In a year of firsts in the majors, Collin Morikawa might have topped them all. His performance over four days at the British Open was unlike anything seen at Royal St. George’s, even in such ideal weather for the English coast. In his first real test of links golf, Morikawa didn’t make a bogey over his final 31 holes, blowing past mistake-prone Louis Oosthuizen and never flinching as Jordan Spieth made one last charge late Sunday afternoon.
