The Pershing County Mustangs are back from a week off. They’ll host West Wendover on Thursday, at 7 p.m. The JV boys travel to Elko on Friday. On Thursday, Oct. 20, the Mustangs travel to rival school Battle Mountain at 7 p.m.. The Mustangs are 4-2 overall and tied for second at 3-1 in the Northern 2A with Battle Mountain.
The inaugural Winnemucca Cup was played in a two-series event that started on Oct. 1 and will continue Oct. 22. The high desert of northern Nevada is the setting to determine the seeding and who will be the Western United States 9s men’s champion. Winnemucca will also crown the USA Women’s 9s National Champion.
A storm blew into Lovelock from Ely on Saturday morning. The Pershing County High School girls soccer hosted White Pine and lost 7-0.
The Pershing County High School volleyball team settled an old score on Friday night. As Mustang fans may remember, Incline beat the Mustangs twice last season and won the league championship. The Mustangs set a goal of beating them this year.
Many spectators expected a one-sided victory for the Pershing County High School football team against North Tahoe. They were in for a surprise. The Mustangs traveled to Tahoe City on Saturday and beat the Lakers 28-20. "We were able to secure the victory but shot ourselves in the foot many times. It definitely was not our best performance but credit to North Tahoe for playing a great game," coach Mike Brooks said.
After the soccer and volleyball teams won their homecoming games, attention shifted to the Pershing County football team. The Mustangs hoped to make it a three-peat by beating Yerington but the defending state champions walked off with the win 41-24. Fans packed the stands on both sides. It was the Yerington's first road trip of the year. It was also their first league game, after blanking Dayton in August (44-0). Lovelock made the Lions work harder for the win.
Homecoming doesn't get any better than this. Last Thursday, the PCHS volleyball team went 3-1 against Battle Mountain. The Mustangs beat their rival school in four sets 25-18, 19-25, 25-21, 25-20. Pershing County fans were vocal throughout the fast-paced game. The winning streak continued on Saturday, as the Mustangs beat visiting West Wendover in three sets 25-12, 25-10, 28-26. With the wins, the Mustangs improved to 10-6, overall and 5-1 in the Northern 2A.
The Pershing County High School girls soccer started a winning streak on Homecoming Day in Lovelock. The Mustangs defeated Battle Mountain 2-1. On Saturday they beat the visiting Yerington Lions 4-1. That’s six more goals for the Mustangs, bringing their total to 14, about four more than this time last year. With the wins, the Mustangs improve to 3-5, overall, and 3-4 in the 2A Northern League.
The Pershing County girls soccer team hosted two league games this past week. They lost to Incline 4-2 and North Tahoe 8-0 but scored two goals against Incline bringing their total to eight so far this season. The Mustangs now stand at 1-5, overall, and 1-4 in the Northern 2A.
The Nevada High School Rodeo Association was in Ely on Sept. 9-10 for the White Pine High School Rodeo. Humboldt County’s Emma Garijo won the barrel racing average with a combined time of 25.450 seconds. She took home the top spot in the opening performance with a time of 17.659 and was the runner-up in the second performance at 17.791. Garijo added a sixth-place finish in pole bending.
This past Friday, the Pershing County High School football team hosted the Silver Stage Nighthawks. It was Silver Stage’s first game of the year. Pershing County packed the stands and a sizable crowd made the trip from Silver Springs. The Mustangs continued their winning streak, blanking the Nighthawks 42-0.
The Pershing County volleyball team won two league games this past week. On Friday, they traveled to the Silver State Volleyball Club to play Coral Academy. The Mustangs beat the Falcons 25-18, 19-25, 25-13, 25-14.
A trio of Sage Ridge sophomores scored seven goals against the Pershing High School girls soccer team on Saturday. Unfortunately, Pershing County joins the list of girls’ soccer teams bitten by the Scorpions so far this season. The final score was 7-0, with Sage Ridge scoring two goals in the first half and five in the second. To date, Sage Ridge has blanked Battle Mountain 10-0 and West Wendover 16-0. Incline got a couple of goals past them but still lost 10-2 earlier this month.
Sometimes a loss feels more like a win. Last Friday the Pershing County High School volleyball team lost to Yerington in four sets 13-25, 25-13, 20-25, 22-25. "It was the best played match I have seen from my Mustang team in a couple of years. They played with heart and purpose. I hate losing, but I love losing when we play like that," Monica Halverson said. The home crowd in the PCHS gym agreed. They sat spellbound by the scrappiness of the Lovelock girls. If a player made a mistake they let it go and focused on the next serve.
What has been a common occurrence in the northern Nevada and California areas the past couple years, smoke from fires forced the cancelation and postponing of high school events. Smoke for the Mosquito Fire in California moved into the Lake Tahoe area on Friday, a spot where a number of Lowry High School teams were scheduled to compete.
