Pershing County soccer scores two league wins over homecoming weekend

The Pershing County High School girls soccer started a winning streak on Homecoming Day in Lovelock. The Mustangs defeated Battle Mountain 2-1. On Saturday they beat the visiting Yerington Lions 4-1. That’s six more goals for the Mustangs, bringing their total to 14, about four more than this time last year. With the wins, the Mustangs improve to 3-5, overall, and 3-4 in the 2A Northern League.

Pershing County girls soccer team drops two league games

The Pershing County girls soccer team hosted two league games this past week.  They lost to Incline 4-2 and North Tahoe 8-0 but scored two goals against Incline bringing their total to eight so far this season. The Mustangs now stand at 1-5, overall, and 1-4 in the Northern 2A.

High school rodeo makes its way to Ely

The Nevada High School Rodeo Association was in Ely on Sept. 9-10 for the White Pine High School Rodeo. Humboldt County’s Emma Garijo won the barrel racing average with a combined time of 25.450 seconds.  She took home the top spot in the opening performance with a time of 17.659 and was the runner-up in the second performance at 17.791. Garijo added a sixth-place finish in pole bending. 

Pershing County football grounds the Nighthawks

This past Friday, the Pershing County High School football team hosted the Silver Stage Nighthawks.  It was Silver Stage’s first game of the year. Pershing County packed the stands and a sizable crowd made the trip from Silver Springs.  The Mustangs continued their winning streak, blanking the Nighthawks 42-0.

Pershing County volleyball goes 2-0 for the week

The Pershing County volleyball team won two league games this past week.  On Friday, they traveled to the Silver State Volleyball Club to play Coral Academy.  The Mustangs beat the Falcons 25-18, 19-25, 25-13, 25-14.

Pershing County soccer loses league match to Sage Ridge

A trio of Sage Ridge sophomores scored seven goals against the Pershing High School girls soccer team on Saturday.  Unfortunately, Pershing County joins the list of girls’ soccer teams bitten by the Scorpions so far this season.  The final score was 7-0, with Sage Ridge scoring two goals in the first half and five in the second. To date, Sage Ridge has blanked Battle Mountain 10-0 and West Wendover 16-0. Incline got a couple of goals past them but still lost 10-2 earlier this month.

PCHS volleyball splits league matches

Sometimes a loss feels more like a win. Last Friday the Pershing County High School volleyball team lost to Yerington in four sets 13-25, 25-13, 20-25, 22-25.  "It was the best played match I have seen from my Mustang team in a couple of years. They played with heart and purpose. I hate losing, but I love losing when we play like that," Monica Halverson said.  The home crowd in the PCHS gym agreed. They sat spellbound by the scrappiness of the Lovelock girls. If a player made a mistake they let it go and focused on the next serve. 

Smoke in Lake Tahoe are forces a number of cancelations for high school sports

What has been a common occurrence in the northern Nevada and California areas the past couple years, smoke from fires forced the cancelation and postponing of high school events. Smoke for the Mosquito Fire in California moved into the Lake Tahoe area on Friday, a spot where a number of Lowry High School teams were scheduled to compete.

Pershing County flattens Incline

This past Friday night, the Pershing County High School football team hosted Incline for the first home football game of the year. The spirit squad had a lot to shout about. The Mustangs won the Northern 2A contest 40-0.

Nevada High School Rodeo Association starts new season

The National High School Finals may have ended just over a month ago, but a new season for the Nevada High School Rodeo Association got under way Aug. 27-28 with the Carson/Douglas rodeo. Emma Garijo, who finishes second at the national finals in pole bending in July, picked up where she left off and won the average in the event with a time of 41.733 seconds. 

Nevada to host Kansas in 2023

Nevada Football announced a home-and-home series with Kansas, which will see the Wolf Pack host the Jayhawks at Mackay Stadium in 2023.

PCHS crushes Dayton

On Friday the Pershing County High School football team rebounded from its loss to Portola. The Mustangs beat Dayton 42-6, as they traveled to Dayton for the non-league match-up. Noel Zaldivar started things off with two touchdowns. Early on, he rushed for four yards. 

Pershing County soccer splits league matches

It was a six-goal weekend for the Pershing County Mustangs soccer team. Last Friday they scored five goals in their first win of the year.  They made the long trip to West Wendover, defeating the Wolverines 5-2.  At halftime, each team had one goal. However, the Mustangs put together some outstanding scoring  chances in the second half.  “They communicated and were first to the ball. We are proud of how they worked together and took home the win,” Matt Fuller said.

PCHS volleyball goes ‘mind over matter’

The Pershing County volleyball team has a new motto — “mind over matter.” Miriam Webster says it’s about controlling a problem by using your mind. “I pick a different theme every year I coach. It gives our program a cool way to stay focused on the season. This motto is one of my favorites because volleyball is as much a mental game as it is a physical game,” Monica Halverson said. So far, it’s working. 

Pershing County volleyball team aces Yerington tournament

Goodbye to the preseason jitters.  The Pershing County High School volleyball team participated in the 18th annual Yerington tournament this past Friday and Saturday.  The girls played half a dozen games, one after another.  “Being part of the 38 teams that comprise this awesome tournament, we played a lot of volleyball this weekend,” said Monica Halverson, the head varsity coach.
