“I couldn’t be more proud of these young ladies. I enjoy watching them cheer together. They go out, have fun and cheer their hearts out,” said coach Cece Thornhill. She’s speaking about the 2022-2023 PCHS Spirit Squad.
The PCHS volleyball week started last Thursday with a 5:30 a.m. practice. The girls got up early so they could support the football team in Battle Mountain. On Friday, the Mustangs beat the visiting Incline Highlanders in five sets 19-25, 32-30. 25-20, 17-25, 15-13. This past Saturday, Pershing County traveled to Tahoe City, Calif., and lost to the North Tahoe Lakers in four sets 16-25, 25-21, 21-25, 23-25. The team now stands at 15-8 overal, and 10-3 in the Northern 2A. They are third in the league.
It was just another Thursday night in the Battle Mountain and Pershing County High School football rivalry. One last beautiful fall night and a boisterous crowd greeted the players on the field. It was a night of momentum for both squads, as Battle Mountain struck for the first 13 points of the game, only to see Pershing County rally for a 39-22 win and secure the No. 2 seed in the playoffs in the Northern 2A.
The Pershing County High School football team capped their senior night with a 56-0 win over visiting West Wendover.
It's all about mind over matter for the Pershing County volleyball team. They won two away matches this past week. On Friday they beat Battle Mountain 25-27, 25-15, 23-25, 25-22, 15-13. On Saturday, they traveled to West Wendover and won 25-16, 26-24, 22-25, 25-19. With the wins Pershing County improved to 14-7 overall and 9-2 in the Northern 2A. They remain third in the league behind North Tahoe and Yerington.
It was a rollicking road week for the Pershing County High School soccer team. On Wednesday they beat Battle Mountain with a final score of 2-0. Friday, they traveled to Incline and lost to the Highlanders 6-2. On Saturday, Pershing County lost 15-0 to the North Tahoe Lakers, the defending 2A state champions. For the week, the Mustangs added four goals, bringing their season total to 20.
The PCHS volleyball team played two league matches last week, one on the road and one at home. On Friday they traveled to Yerington and lost in three sets 25-13, 25-22, 25-23.
No matter the score, the Pershing County girls soccer team works hard. On Friday they traveled to Reno to play Sage Ridge. The Scorpions beat the Mustangs 10-2.
The Pershing County Mustangs are back from a week off. They’ll host West Wendover on Thursday, at 7 p.m. The JV boys travel to Elko on Friday. On Thursday, Oct. 20, the Mustangs travel to rival school Battle Mountain at 7 p.m.. The Mustangs are 4-2 overall and tied for second at 3-1 in the Northern 2A with Battle Mountain.
The inaugural Winnemucca Cup was played in a two-series event that started on Oct. 1 and will continue Oct. 22. The high desert of northern Nevada is the setting to determine the seeding and who will be the Western United States 9s men’s champion. Winnemucca will also crown the USA Women’s 9s National Champion.
A storm blew into Lovelock from Ely on Saturday morning. The Pershing County High School girls soccer hosted White Pine and lost 7-0.
The Pershing County High School volleyball team settled an old score on Friday night. As Mustang fans may remember, Incline beat the Mustangs twice last season and won the league championship. The Mustangs set a goal of beating them this year.
Many spectators expected a one-sided victory for the Pershing County High School football team against North Tahoe. They were in for a surprise. The Mustangs traveled to Tahoe City on Saturday and beat the Lakers 28-20. "We were able to secure the victory but shot ourselves in the foot many times. It definitely was not our best performance but credit to North Tahoe for playing a great game," coach Mike Brooks said.
After the soccer and volleyball teams won their homecoming games, attention shifted to the Pershing County football team. The Mustangs hoped to make it a three-peat by beating Yerington but the defending state champions walked off with the win 41-24. Fans packed the stands on both sides. It was the Yerington's first road trip of the year. It was also their first league game, after blanking Dayton in August (44-0). Lovelock made the Lions work harder for the win.
Homecoming doesn't get any better than this. Last Thursday, the PCHS volleyball team went 3-1 against Battle Mountain. The Mustangs beat their rival school in four sets 25-18, 19-25, 25-21, 25-20. Pershing County fans were vocal throughout the fast-paced game. The winning streak continued on Saturday, as the Mustangs beat visiting West Wendover in three sets 25-12, 25-10, 28-26. With the wins, the Mustangs improved to 10-6, overall and 5-1 in the Northern 2A.
