The returners for the Pershing County High School girls basketball team are hungry to win, says coach Lee Houston. And with players like Taylor Garland, Anna Happy, Yasmine Mckinney, Kaylah Hanley and Mady Grenz there are plenty of wins ahead.
Just before Thanksgiving, Lovelock's Mustang cheer leaders received a surprising phone call. The Pop Warner judges invited them to compete in the national competition in Florida. The past few weeks have been eventful for the group, most of whom never cheered before.

The Lovelock Pop Warner football teams played the sport they love all season. They racked up many wins and a few losses, learning from each game no matter the outcome.
Lovelock is blessed with some of the best Junior PeeWee cheerleaders around. That's what the judges at the Reno Sparks Convention Center decided on Sunday, Nov. 5, when they awarded the squad a first-place trophy. "These girls worked hard all season. Most of them either never cheered before or hadn't since they were very little," said coach Marci Carruth. She co-coaches with Kelli Anderson.
It was agonizingly close. The Pershing County High School volleyball team nearly beat the Green Valley Christian Guardians in the semifinal match of the State championship games in Vegas last Friday. The Mustangs lasted five sets against the No. 1 seed from the Southern 2A 25-10, 25-16, 24-26, 24-26, 16-14.
Last Saturday, on a dazzling fall afternoon, the Pershing County Mustangs extended their nine-game winning streak. They beat Lincoln County 20-6, earning a shot at the 2A state title in Las Vegas. To make the win even sweeter it happened on the Mustangs' home field. It was the semifinal round of the NIAA State playoffs.
Friday night football wouldn’t be the same without the Pershing County High School spirit squad. They’re a tight knit group and it shows in their performance.

The Pershing County Mustangs volleyball team scored back-to-back wins this past week. On Wednesday (Oct. 25), they celebrated senior night and went 3-1 with the Incline Highlanders (25-22, 23-25, 26-24, 25-23). Seniors Anna Happy, Yasmine McKinney, KayLee Poffenroth and Taylor Garland couldn't have asked for a better send off from their families, friends and fans.
The Pershing County High School football team turned a slow start into a stampede this season, as they said farewell to its seniors — Brian Kauvaka, Bryce Gottschalk, Eddie Herrera, Aaron Kienbaum and Conner Fecht.
This past Friday night, the Pershing County High School football team hosted rival Battle Mountain for senior night. The important top spot in the Northern 2A was up for grabs as well and Pershing County won 34-7, to the delight of the home crowd to take control of the Northern 2A.
Last week, the Pershing County girls soccer team competed against some skilled and experienced teams, according to coach Kelly Brooks. On Tuesday, Oct. 10, the Mustangs hosted the Churchill County Greenwave (12-2) and lost 10-0.
