Battle Mountain’s Max Villanueva and Avry Tucker qualified for the NIAA 2A State Boys Golf Championship that took place Monday and Tuesday at Toana Vista Golf Course in West Wendover. Results were unavailable at press time.
Battle Mountain’s Sruti Bhakta and Tristin Cordingley took home individual titles at the Northern 2A Regional Championships last weekend at Churchill County High School in Fallon. Bhakta, a senior, set a personal best in the pole vault at 8 feet to win the event. Bhakta added a fifth-place finish in the triple jump, with a personal-best leap of 28 feet, 9 inches. She set another personal best in the 100 meters with a time of 13.89 seconds. She will head to Las Vegas for the state championships in the pole vault.
The Battle Mountain Shorthorn track and field team competed in the Eureka Invite on April 20 The team came away with 17 personal bests, two season bests and six first-place finishes. Ben Disbro won both of his events with personal bests to lead the Shorthorns.
The Battle Mountain High School track and field team concluded its regular season this past Saturday in Winnemucca at the Lowry Invitational. Tristin Cordingley set a personal best in the shot put to win a gold medal with a toss of 44 feet, 5 inches. The senior also set a personal best in the discus with a toss of 120-6. Cody Ostler posted a pair of third-place finishes in the jumping events. The junior had a leap of 18-8 in the long jump and 38-8.50 in the triple jump. Aldo Castellanos was fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 38-7.50 and the sophomore was ninth in the 100-meter dash with time of 11.89 seconds. Isaiah Powell was fifth in the long jump with a personal-best leap of 18-5. Powell added a seventh-place outing in the 400 meters with a personal-best time of 56.30.
The Battle Mountain High School softball team closed out its season at home on Friday against rival Pershing County. The contest was a make-up game from earlier in the season that was postponed due to weather. The Lady Longhorns gave the No. 3 seed all they could handle before dropping the contest 7-5. Battle Mountain finished the year 13-12 overall and 9-12 in the Northern 2A.
The University of Nevada athletics department saw its football program receive a Public Recognition Award as part of the NCAA Division I Academic Performance Programy. The APR program is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all NCAA programs. The Wolf Pack’s football team was in the top 10 percent of all of the teams in their respective sports to earn the Public Recognition Awards. This is the second straight year that Nevada football has been honored.
The Nevada football team will play at Iowa in 2022, the schools announced today. The game will be played on Sept. 17, 2022 at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City. It will be the Wolf Pack’s first-ever game against the Hawkeyes.
The Battle Mountain Junior High School track and field team competed in the White Pine Cougar Invite in Ely on Saturday, April 13. The team earned 35 personal bests and six season bests. Jolena Ayers earned three first-place finishes and a sixth place to lead the Shorthorns. The eighth-grader had a personal best in the triple Jump of 26 feet, 4 inches, a season best in the mile at 6 minutes, 7.6 seconds and the 400 meters at 1:11.9 for wins, and 6th in long jump with season best 12-9.
The Battle Mountain High School softball team will host Pershing County on Friday at noon to conclude the regular season. The contest is a make-up game from a postponement earlier in the season due to weather.
The Battle Mountain High School baseball team collected three wins last weekend over rival Pershing County. The series opened in Battle Mountain on Friday and the Longhorns needed just three innings to win 15-0 and end the game early due to the mercy rule. The Longhorns scored 13 runs in the first inning.
The Battle Mountain High School softball team made its way to Yerington last weekend and dropped three games to the Lions. Yerington swept a doubleheader on Friday, winning 12-3 and 8-7 and a single game on Saturday 5-2.
The Battle Mountain High School baseball team took to the road last weekend and dropped three games to Yerington in Northern 2A action. The Lions swept a doubleheader on Friday afternoon, winning 13-3 and 11-4. Yerington won the finale on Saturday 18-3. Battle Mountain is currently fifth in the Northern 2A at 7-10, with fourt games remaining in the league schedule. Battle Mountain has a three-game series with rival Pershing County this weekend. The Mustangs are last in the Northern 2A at 2-16.
For one of the few times this year, the Battle Mountain High School boys golf team had nice weather for one of its tournaments. The Longhorns were on their home course on Wednesday, April 17, and finished fifth as a team. West Wendover had four of the top five individual finishes and led the way in the teams standings with a round of 353. The Elko JV was second at 419. Tonopah and Wells tied for third with scores of 447 and Battle Mountain was fifth at 458. Spring Creek JV (466), White Pine (508) and Jackpot (523) rounded out the team scores.
The NHL will hold its annual awards ceremony June 19 at Mandalay Bay Events Center. The league announced the date and venue before Game 4 of the first-round playoff series between the San Jose Sharks and the Vegas Golden Knights. It marks the 11th year of a partnership between the NHL and Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, which was extended for three years last April, and the 10th time the league will honor the best players and the top performances of the season in Las Vegas.
University of Nevada director of athletics Doug Knuth announced today the hiring of Steve Alford as the head coach of the nationally ranked Wolf Pack men’s basketball program.
