Fall high school sports get going throughout Nevada

The Battle Mountain High School football team kicked off the first day of contact practice at midnight on Saturday, Aug. 7. It was a quick summer for high school athletes, as the 2021 fall sports season is under way in Nevada. Football teams throughout the state started practice on Monday, Aug. 2, while the remainder of the sports (girls and boys soccer, girls and boys cross country, girls golf and volleyball) started their season this past Saturday. The first official games can start on Aug. 20.  

Nevada football single-game tickets on sale

Nevada athletics has single-game tickets for all six football home games on sale at www.mynevadatickets.com. Additionally, Wolf Pack fans can purchase single-game tickets for the coming season by phone, at 775-348-PACK (7225). Those who may have questions or need assistance may also contact the ticket office by phone or by emailing wolfpackticketinfo@unr.edu. Adult single-game tickets will start at just $20, with youth (eighth grade and under) tickets starting at $10. Season tickets for 2021 are still available for as low as $89 per seat.

Battle Mountain racers hit the track in Winnemucca

Drivers from around the Northern Nevada area made their way to Winnemucca this past weekend for two days of dirt-track racing. Friday night's action was cut short just before the start of the main events. The heat races were completed, but a rain storm hit during intermission and wiped the rest of the night out. Racers returned Saturday afternoon to complete the Friday main events and Saturday's action took place as well. Battle Mountain Raceway will hold races on Aug. 14.  

Volleyball team gets ready for season with Gold Medal Squared camp

Battle Mountain youngsters from the sixth to 12th grade had the opportunity to improve their volleyball skills with the Gold Medal Squared volleyball camp last week at the Battle Mountain Rec Center. The camp focused on fundamental skills, game-like activities and teaming systems.  

Battle Mountain swim team competes at Silver State Championships

The Battle Mountain swim team concluded its season at Idlewild Pool in Reno at the 2021 NNA Silver State Championships, which was held July 16-18. There were 30 teams and 401 swimmers from California and Nevada. The finals on July 18, were canceled due to air quality. Susie Thompson finished fourth in the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 38.25, a 14.44 second improvement. She placed 16th in the girls 200 individual medley with a time of 3 minutes, 37.13 seconds, a .24 second improvement. She placed 15th in the 100-meter breaststroke at 2:01.47 and 21st in the 100-meter freestyle (1:33.40). 

Annual RPM Camp takes place at Battle Mountain Recreation Center

The annual RPM Fundamental Basketball Camp was held July 19-21 at the Battle Mountain Recreation Center. Lander County sponsored the camp and there was no fee. The camp is put on by Battle Mountain girls basketball coach Paul Tremayne, Randy Havens, a coach in California and Michael Anderson from Wooster High School in Reno. The camp provides instruction to boys and girls in the fourth to 12th grades, teaching them the fundamentals of basketball. The goal is to develop the skills necessary to become successful players in the future.   

National High School Finals Rodeo wrap up in Nebraska

The high school rodeo season came to a close on Saturday night as the National High School Finals Rodeo concluded its week stay at the Lancaster Event Center in Lincoln, Neb. A handful of Humboldt County and Battle Mountain club members took part in the event. Humboldt County’s Billy DeLong competed in three events.  He finished 29th in the nation with 275 points. In his first performance, he scored 137 points, which was good enough for sixth and 37th in the first go-around.

Nevada has three receivers named to Biletnikoff Award watch list

Three Nevada players were named to the Biletnikoff Award Watch List Thursday morning, as wide receivers Romeo Doubs and Elijah Cooks, and tight end Cole Turner were tabbed candidates for college football’s award for top receiver. The three candidates for the Wolf Pack led all schools in the country on the list, and continues a first week of watch list reveals which has featured plenty of Nevada presence.

Watch List Season 2021 got underway Monday morning, and three members of the Wolf Pack found their names called on the Maxwell Award powered by Mammoth Tech and Bednarik Award powered by Mammoth Tech Preseason Watch Lists. Quarterback Carson Strong and wide receiver Romeo Doubs were named to the watch list of the Maxwell Award, given annually to the nation’s College Player of the Year.

Collin Morikawa a double major winner and looking for more

In a year of firsts in the majors, Collin Morikawa might have topped them all. His performance over four days at the British Open was unlike anything seen at Royal St. George’s, even in such ideal weather for the English coast. In his first real test of links golf, Morikawa didn’t make a bogey over his final 31 holes, blowing past mistake-prone Louis Oosthuizen and never flinching as Jordan Spieth made one last charge late Sunday afternoon.

Youngsters get on the mat for Lander County wrestling camp

The Lander County Recreation Center is sponsored a youth wrestling camp last week. The camp instructor wasl Richard Cox, former four year starter for Division I Gardner-Webb University and current head coach at R-S Central High School in North Carolina. Cox is also a Battle Mountain graduate. The younger group spent more time learning the fundamentals, while the older group did more advanced drills.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said Tuesday that the U.S. military will allow Naval Academy graduate Cameron Kinley to pursue a career in the NFL with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Wolf Pack well-represented on PFF, Phil Steele Preseason All-Mountain West teams

Nevada Football has continued to rack up the preseason honors ahead of the 2021 campaign, landing a total of 33 selections, including 15 to the first teams, on the Phil Steele and Pro Football Focus (PFF) Preseason All-Mountain West Teams. The Pack’s 15 selections to the Phil Steele Preseason All-Mountain West Team shared the conference lead with Boise State and San Jose State, but its eight first-team selections far out-paced the field, being twice that of the next-best program (Fresno State, with four). On the PFF teams, Nevada led the way in both overall selections (19) and first-team nods (seven).

Zach Johnson tests positive, list of British Open WDs grows

Former champion Zach Johnson tested positive for the coronavirus before getting on a charter flight to the British Open, forcing him to join the growing list of withdrawals and ending his streak at playing 69 consecutive majors. The R&A said Johnson, who played in the John Deere Classic in Illinois on Sunday, and local qualifier Louis de Jager of South Africa had positive COVID-19 tests and withdrew.
