Battle Mountain knocks off White Pine in four sets

The Battle Mountain High School volleyball team was back on its home floor this past Friday to host White Pine of the Southern 2A. The Lady Longhorns won a back-and-forth first set 27-25 and after dropping the second set 25-22, they closed out the match winning 25-11 and 25-22. A pair of aces by Shea Jones gave Battle Mountain an early lead at 4-3 in the opening set, only to see White Pine go on a 6-1 run to go in front 9-5.  Later in the first set, the Lady Longhorns picked up two kills from Cristina Holley to stay within a point at 13-12.

Battle Mountain JV comes up short against White Pine

The Battle Mountain JV volleyball team took on White Pine last Friday at home, with the Bobcats coming out on top 22-25, 25-18 and 15-11.

Battle Mountain girls finish second on home course

After taking just one player to the first tournament in the opening week of the season, the Battle Mountain High School girls golf team was fully assembled for its home tournament at Mountain View Golf Course this past Thursday. Battle Mountain finished second in the tournament with a 526, while West Wendover took the top spot at 465. White Pine and Wells also competed in the tournament, but did not have enough players for a team total. The Elko and Spring Creek JV were on hand as well, but their scores were separated from the 2A squads. 

Winnemucca Regional Raceway holds two nights of dirt action

Drivers were back at Winnemucca Regional Raceway this past weekend for Hot August Nights and two days of action. Over 60 cars raced over the weekend. The season is quickly coming to an end, with races taking place on Sept. 17 and Sept. 18.  

Cantlay delivers in the clutch

No one ever questioned that Patrick Cantlay had the chops to be among golf’s elite. What he might have lacked in number of PGA Tour victories, he made for it with the way he won or the field he beat. His victory Sunday in the BMW Championship — the fifth of his career and his PGA Tour-leading third of the season — was a little of each. On a Caves Valley course that suited the biggest hitters, facing the biggest masher of them all in Bryson DeChambeau, he delivered a moment that will be remembered for the ice in his veins and nerves of steel.

Battle Mountain football game canceled

The Battle Mountain/Needles Calif. football game set for last Saturday was canceled due to Covid issues with the Needles squad.

Lady Longhorns see action on home floor for first time

The Battle Mountain High School and junior high gyms were a busy place this past weekend, as the Lady Longhorn volleyball team hosted their tournament for the first time since 2019. Schools were not allowed to have tournaments a season ago due to Covid concerns.

Nevada men’s basketball Mountain West slate released

The Mountain West released its 2021-22 men’s basketball schedule Friday, as the slate returns to its 18-game format. With the conference schedule returning to its traditional look after a 20-game slate in 2020-21, Nevada will play home-and-homes with eight schools, while playing one opponent at home only (New Mexico), and one on the road only (Air Force).

Nevada baseball names director of player and program development

Matt Lisle, who holds more than 16 years of coaching experience at the collegiate and professional level, has been named Nevada baseball’s director of player and program development, head coach T.J. Bruce announced Aug. 18. In 2020, Lisle helped lead the Fresno State softball program to an unprecedented turnaround. The Bulldogs, who finished No. 64 and No. 89 in the RPI the last two seasons, improved to No. 12 in 2020. 

Battle Mountain rolls past Lincoln County in season opener

After smokey conditions and Covid issues put a damper on most of the high school football games in northern Nevada, the Battle Mountain High School football team was one of the few squads to see the field.

Carson Strong, Toa Taua named to preseason watch lists

Nevada quarterback Carson Strong and running back Toa Taua found their names on a pair of 2021 preseason watch lists, with Strong being tabbed a candidate for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, and Taua a candidate for the Polynesian College Football Player of the Year Award. Strong has previously, this summer, been named a candidate for the Maxwell Award, Davey O’Brien Award, CFPA National Performer of the Year Trophy, and Manning Award, while the announcement is Taua’s second recognition, following his addition to the Reese’s Senior Bowl Watch List last week.

Lady Longhorns to host tournament this weekend

The Battle Mountain High School volleyball team will be hosting a varsity and junior varsity tournament this weekend at the high school and junior high. The Lady Longhorns opened their season this past weekend in Ely at the White Pine Invitational.

Nevada women’s basketball names assistant

Asami Morita has been named assistant coach for the Nevada women’s basketball program, head coach Amanda Levens announced Monday. In her seven seasons at Robert Morris, the Colonials made five Northeast Conference Championship Games, winning titles in 2016, 2017, and 2019. RMU went 133-78 (.630) since 2014-15 and notched 91 wins in league play. 

Strong named to Manning Award watch list

Nevada quarterback Carson Strong was named to his fourth preseason watch list of the summer, being tabbed a candidate for the Manning Award. Ahead of the 2021 campaign, Strong has already been named a candidate for the Maxwell Award, Davey O’Brien Award, and CFPA National Performer of the Year Trophy.

Battle Mountain swimmers compete at High Country Short Course Championships

Members of the Battle Mountain NNA swim team were in Minden from July 30-Aug. 1 for the 2021 High Country Short Course Championship. All four kids for Battle Mountain qualified for the state championships, as Daxon Bakker tied for high points in age group, Nevaeh Serna was the runner up high point in her age group, missing out by two points. The team is coached by Michael Hall. Bakker was first in the boys 8 and under 25-yard backstroke with a time of 21.13 seconds, a 4.70 second improvement. He placed third in the 50-yard breaststroke at 1:05.68 and fifth in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 43.61.
