With a capacity crowd on hand, Battle Mountain High School cristened the new Silver Standard, Marigold Mine Athletic Complex at Tim Knight Field on Friday, Aug. 28. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held that featured all the parties responsible for the complex. In addition the Knight family was on hand as the field was named for the late Tim Knight, who was a fixture at Battle Mountain High School for a number of years as a coach and teacher.
The Battle Mountain High School boys soccer team came away with a third-place finish at the White Pine Invitational this past weekend in Ely. The Longhorns defeated The Meadows in a penalty kick shootout and also earned a victory over the Elko JV.
The Lady Longhorns traveled to Wells last Thursday and finished third with a four-person score of 479. Battle Mountain had two golfers finish in the top four at Chimney Creek Golf Course. Kylee Squires was third at 107 and Kennedie Davis was fourth at 109.

Battle Mountain High School will be opening its new football stadium on Friday with a non-conference game vs. White Pine. Game times are 4:30 p.m. for the junior varsity and the varsity is scheduled to kickoff at 7 p.m. If anyone interested in touring the facility, there will be an opportunity at 1:30 p.m. to do so.

The Battle Mountain High School gym was a busy place last week, with the annual RPM basketball camp. The camp is run by Paul Tremayne, Mike Anderson and Randy Havens. The camp was formed to provide instruction so fourth through 12th grade boys and girls can learn the fundamentals of basketball and develop skills necessary to be successful basketball players. The younger campers went through the basic fundamentals over the three days, while the high school players did more advanced drills.
Two volleyball players from Battle Mountain traveled to Winnemucca in mid July for the Spike Frog volleyball camp. Spike Frog is a private volleyball skills instruction operated by Josh Taylor and Ashley Taylor. The duo were in town to instruct the two-day camp. The camp teaches core skills in passing and serving. Once those fundamentals are achieved, campers move on to spiking, setting, individual defense and blocking.
Battle Mountain resident Billy Baldwin recently went fishing at Willow Creek Reservoir and managed to catch this monster catfish. The fish weighed in at 13 pounds, had a 6 inch width and measured 28 inches long.

Battle Mountain is the home to two state champions for the Knights of Columbus Free Throw Competition, Eleven-year old Brooke Ripley and 13-year old Grace Melver participated in the Nevada state competition and brought home the championships in their age groups. Both Ripley and Melver moved through the local and district competitions to advance to the state finals.
