Lowry boys fall to Elko

The Lowry High School boys soccer team entered Tuesday night’s match in Elko, knowing that a win would get themselves into the playoffs for the first time since 2015 and a second appearance since 2012. The Buckaroos got off to a slow start in the first half and trailed 3-0, before scoring the next two goals. However, the Indians netted an insurance goal in the second half to win 4-2.

Ladies Golf Club results

Gail Piquet shot a low-gross score of 67 to win the first flight of the Winnemucca Ladies Golf Club year-end ringer tournament on Tuesday at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course.

Lady Bucks drop road matches to Spring Creek, Elko

The Lowry High School volleyball team officially saw its playoff chances end with pair of road losses last week. The Lady Bucks were in Spring Creek on Thursday, Oct. 24, and lost 13-25, 25-18, 25-23 and 25-13 to the Spartans. After dominating the first set, the Lady Bucks could not maintain the momentum and allowed the Spartans to win the final three sets. Lowry was in Elko on Friday, Oct. 25, and lost 25-14, 25-19 and 25-12.

Elko girls score two late goals to defeat Lowry

Even though the Lowry High School girls soccer team is out of the playoff chase, the Lady Bucks had the chance to ruin the postseason hopes of Elko on Tuesday afternoon in Winnemucca. For nearly 60 minutes Lowry did just that leading Elko for much of the match, until the Indians scored two late goals to escape with a 2-1 win. Elko stayed in the fifth and final playoff spot with the victory. “It’s coming together and it’s right there,” said LHS coach Misty Stene. “The first half was one of the best we played all year from the tactical side of the game. We just hit that lull for a couple minutes and it hurt us.”

NIAA 3A football playoffs begin this weekend

After starting practice in early August, the football playoffs for 3A schools in Nevada begins this weekend. In the Northern 3A, Lowry High School finished fourth in the Northern 3A at 5-3 and will host No. 5 seed Spring Creek on Friday at 7 p.m. The Buckaroos beat the Spartans 21-20 in Winnemucca in the regular season. As a reminder, the playoff game is an NIAA event and Century Club cards will not be honored. NIAA Courtesy Cards and NIAA Lifetime passes will be honored for the cardholder and one guest.

Kadri, Calvert score twice, Avalanche beats Vegas 6-1

Pierre-Edouard Bellemare was a little lost as a visitor to T-Mobile Arena. While the rest of his Colorado Avalanche teammates knew their way around the visitors' locker room, Bellemare was a newcomer, even after spending the last two seasons with Vegas. But, everything looked familiar once Bellemare got onto the ice. Nadem Kadri and Matt Calvert each scored twice, Bellemare had a goal and two assists against his former team and the Avalanche beat the Golden Knights 6-1 on Friday.

Fallon breaks away for a 40-21 win over Lowry

Hard-hitting, pad-popping, smash-mouth prep football took center stage Thursday night in Winnemucca as league-leading Fallon rolled into town on Senior Night and faced a hungry Lowry team determined to knock off the undefeated Greenwave. Kept to 14 first-half points, Fallon (8-1 overall, 8-0 league) outscored Lowry 26-14 in the second half to post a 40-21 win and earn a first-round bye when the Northern 3A playoffs begin next weekend. Coming into the game, Fallon had reeled off three consecutive shutouts and hadn’t allowed more than a touchdown in a month. Lowry, though, stung Fallon with two first-half touchdowns, the most since Spring Creek scored the same number of points in the first two quarters on Aug. 30.

Cubs hire David Ross to replace Maddon as manager

The Chicago Cubs hired former catcher David Ross to replace Joe Maddon as their manager Thursday, hoping he can help them get back to the playoffs after missing out for the first since 2014. The Cubs announced a three-year deal with Ross with a club option for the 2023 season. He becomes the 55th manager in club history. The 42-year-old Ross played the final two of his 15 major league seasons with the Cubs and was a revered leader on the 2016 team that won the World Series, ending a championship drought dating to 1908. He spent the past three years in Chicago’s front office and was widely viewed as a potential replacement for Maddon, who compiled a 471-339-1 record in five seasons.

McDermitt volleyball team drops matches to Jackpot, Wells

The McDermitt High School volleyball team was on the road for three matches last week against Jackpot and Wells. The Lady Bulldogs were in Jackpot on Friday, Oct. 18, for a doubleheader against the Jaguars.

Lady Bucks split matches with Wolverines, Panthers

The Lowry High School volleyball team picked up a split of two matches this past weekend on the road. The Lady Bucks were in Truckee on Friday, Oct. 18, to play the league-leading Wolverines. Truckee knocked off Lowry in three sets 25-12, 25-14 and 25-8.

Ladies Golf Club results

Winnemucca eighth-grade girls basketball team closes out season with two wins

The Winnemucca Junior High School eighth-grade girls basketball team finished its season with three games last weekend in Reno and Spring Creek. Winnemucca was in Reno on Friday, Oct. 18, to play Shaw Middle School and suffered a 41-37 defeat. Savannah Stoker paced the Warriors with 25 points and Jackie Sanchez and Alexis Galarza each scored six points.

Lowry boys shut out at Spring Creek

Coming off one of the biggest highs of the year with a four-goal comeback against South Tahoe, the Lowry High School boys soccer team suffered one of its biggest lows of the year, with a 6-0 loss at Spring Creek on Tuesday night. The Buckaroos had won the first meeting 3-1 in Winnemucca.

Martinez finishes 10th at NIAA 3A State Girls Golf Championships in Boulder City

Lowry High School’s Angelina Martinez finished 10th at the NIAA 3A State Girls Golf Championships held Monday and Tuesday in Boulder City. Martinez shot a 93 on Monday at Boulder City Municipal Golf Course and 102 on Tuesday at Boulder Creek Golf Club for a two-day total of 195.  Teammate Bailey Hayes finished 17th after rounds of 107 and 102 for a 209. Kaitlyn Hales tied for 20th with rounds of 107-105-212. Truckee’s Ryan Flynn ran away with the state individual title with a 1-under 143, including a six-under 66 on the second day of the tournament.  Pahrump Valley’s Breanne Nygaard was second at 154 and Western’s Carolyn Lemon (155) placed third. Elko’s Caresse Basaraba (166) and Boulder City’s Sydney Krumm (180) rounded out the top five.

WJHS boys at home on Tuesday

The Winnemucca Junior High School boys basketball season started in Spring Creek last weekend and the Warriors will be at home on Tuesday to play Truckee. The opening game starts at 3 p.m, with the next game to immediately follow.
