The 2019-20 winter sports season for Lowry and McDermitt high schools are under way. The Lowry boys basketball team will see its first action this Saturday in Reno. The Buckaroos will take all three teams to scrimmage Reno High School. The official start to the preseason is Dec. 6-7 at the Elko Invitational. Lowry will play Hunter High School on Dec. 6 at 6 p.m. and Reno and Hug on Dec. 7 at 11 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., respectively.
The Winnemucca Regional Raceway Association held its end of the year fundraiser and banquet last Saturday the 9th at the Convention Center. Festivities included a prime rib dinner, catered by the Model T, an awards ceremony and a raffle to raise funds for next year’s season which starts in April at the Stock Car 7001-8499, State Hwy 49, Winnemucca, NV 89445
First-year University of Nevada head men’s basketball coach Steve Alford has inked five high school seniors to play for the Wolf Pack in 2020-21. Alem Huseinovic, DeAndre Henry, Tre Coleman, Daniel Foster and Je’Lani Clark have signed National Letters of Intent to play at Nevada. “This class fills a lot of future needs for our program,” Alford said. “As we build our culture each of these young men are exactly what we look for; interested in their education, unselfish approach to winning and a commitment to be better daily.” The 6-3, 180-pound Clark is from Oakland, Calif. and attends Archbishop Riordan High School. As a junior he averaged 15.5 points, 6.1 rebounds, 3.4 assists and two steals. From the field he shot 51 percent and 35 percent from behind the arc last season.
Lowry High School’s Bailee Brinkerhoff and Ariana Galindo were named to the honorable mention squad as part of the Northern 3A girls soccer all-league team. The all-league teams are selected by the league’s coaches. Brinkerhoff and Galindo each had one goal this season for the Lady Bucks. Brinkerhoff, a junior, primarily played as a defender and midfielder and Galindo, a senior, was a midfielder and forward.
Lowry High School’s Anthony Cuevas and Johan Silva were named the Northern 3A boys Northern 3A all-league first team. The all-league teams are selected by the league’s coaches. Cuevas, a senior, played a striker and Silva, a sophomore, was the Buckaroos’ top defender. In addition, Cuevas was named to the all-state first team and Bravo was a second-team, all-state selection. Lowry finished the year at 11-10-2 overall and 9-7-2 in the Northern 3A ‘A’ division. The Buckaroos earned the fourth seed in the Northern 3A Regional Championships and beat South 4-3 in the opening round of the playoffs. It was the first playoff win for Lowry since 2008. The Buckaroos eventually lost to Sparks in the semifinals. Sparks played in then state title game this year and lost 2-1 to Western.
Nevada football true freshman placekicker Brandon Talton has been named a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award. Talton is one of 20 semifinalists for the award, which is presented annually to the nation’s top placekicker. The Vacaville, Calif. native has garnered many accolades throughout the season, including a spot on The Athletic and ESPN’s midseason All-America teams and three Mountain West Special Teams Player of the Week awards.
The Reno Aces are set to begin construction on extended protective netting around the diamond at Greater Nevada Field in early December 2019. An exact date has not yet been announced. Installation of the nets will extend foul pole to foul pole and will be ready for the 2020 season set to open April 9 at 1:05 p.m. against division rival Sacramento.
Lowry High School senior Sierra Maestrejuan was named to the Northern 3A volleyball first team as an outside hitter. Maestrejuan also earned all-state, second team honors.
The Lowry High School boys soccer team picked up a 3-1 win over North Tahoe on Friday afternoon in Tahoe City, Calif., to secure its first postseason berth since 2015. The Buckaroos led 1-0 at halftime and picked up two second-half goals against the Lakers to finish fourth in the Northern 3A 'A' division at 9-7-2. Lowry will take on South Tahoe on Thursday at 3 p.m. at Churchill County High School in Fallon. Lowry and South Tahoe split its two regular season meetings. South Tahoe won 5-0 on Sept. 13, in Lake Tahoe, while Lowry overcame a 3-0 deficit in Winnemucca on Oct, 19, to beat South Tahoe 4-3.
Lowry High School will be sending three cross country runners to the NIAA 3A State Championships Saturday at Rancho San Rafael Park in Reno. Sophomore Jovi Kuskie finished second in the Northern 3A Regional Championship this past Saturday in Reno with a time of 20 minutes, 15 seconds. Spring Creek's Kendra Lusk won the race at 19:56.
The Lowry High School girls soccer team was looking to close out its year on a high note Friday afternoon in the season finale and also senior night for four players on the squad. The Lady Bucks played a strong first half with a number of scoring opportunities, but North Tahoe left Winnemucca with a 4-0 victory after scoring three second-half goals. Lowry ended the season at 1-17-3 overall and 0-16-2 in the Northern 3A ‘A’ division. First-year head coach Misty Stene noted the record doesn’t reflect on the improvement by the team.
The last time the Lowry High School football team hosted a regional playoff game, the current squad was in elementary or middle school in 2012. The Buckaroos erased that streak this year, finishing fourth in the Northern 3A and earning the No. 4 seed. Lowry, playing in the postseason for the second straight year, hosted Spring Creek on a cool crisp Friday night. The Buckaroos beat the Spartans 21-20 in the regular season in September. In would not go Lowry’s way the second time around, as Spring Creek won a low-scoring battle 21-7 to end the Buckaroos’ year at 6-4. Spring Creek will now play Churchill County in Fallon on Friday and Fernley will host Truckee in the other regional final in the Northern 3A. “We just couldn’t get things going,” said LHS coach Taua Cabatbat. “We came out sluggish and couldn’t get the offense going. They are a good team and will keep the ball from you with their running game.”
A portion of the Lowry High School cross country team was in Spring Creek on Thursday, Oct. 24, for the Northeast Nevada JV championships. “We had a very nice day of racing,” said LHS coach Kathy Norcutt. “It was beautiful weather on a difficult course.” Freshman Taylor Hawkins posted a third-place finish on the girls side with a time of 24 minutes, 22.19 seconds. Spring Creek’s Mariah Cooper won the race at 23:49.73 and teammate Brandi Manhire (24:18.37) was second. Lowry’s Ryleigh Raabe was 10th in the race with a time of 26:34.10.
