Lowry boys soccer team splits with Dayton, Elko in 2-0 decisions

It was an unexpected two-match road trip for the Lowry High School boys soccer team last week. The Buckaroos were scheduled to host Dayton on Friday, but the administration at the Lyon County school asked the Buckaroos if they could bring both the girls and the boys teams from Winnemucca on the day.

Maybe this spring football thing isn’t all that bad after all. The Lowry High School football team showed on Saturday it could score in a number of ways in its 63-27 win over Dayton on the Dust Devils’ home field.

Lady Bucks fall to Spartans, Dust Devils in Eastern 3A action

Coming off a tough three-set loss to Fernley, the Lowry High School volleyball team was looking to rebound and pick up its first win of the season against Elko last Thursday in Winnemucca. Even though the Lady Bucks fell short in the match to the Indians 26-24, 25-23 and 25-20, head coach Skylar Estes was happy with the way the team bounced back.

McDermitt football team plays on home field for first time since 2018

It had been over two years since the McDermitt High School football team took a snap on its home field. After not playing in 2019 and having the 2020 fall season moved to the spring, the Bulldogs stepped on the field this past Saturday with eight players — including no seniors. 

Lowry cross country team competes in Elko

The Lowry High School cross country team made its way to Elko on Tuesday, March 9, racing on a hilly Adobe Middle School course in chilly and windy conditions. On the girls side, Lowry’s Jovi Kuskie finished second in a time of 21 minutes, 54 seconds, behind Spring Creek’s Kendra Lusk. Lusk is the reigning 3A state champion and Kuskie is the state runner-up.

McDermitt football sees field for the first time since 2018

While most high school football teams have waited 15 months or so to get back on the field, the McDermitt High School football team has been looking forward to play for some 30 months.

Lowry boys split opening matches

It was a roller coaster of a weekend for the Lowry High School boys soccer team who saw polar opposites of results in its return to action. The Buckaroos traveled to Spring Creek on Friday and dominated the Spartans in a 7-1 win.  However, in its home-opener on Saturday, Lowry suffered a 7-1 loss to Fernley.

It was a mixed bag of results for the Lowry High School girls soccer team, who returned to the field for the first time in 15 months. Lowry hosted Spring Creek on Friday afternoon and suffered a 4-0 loss to the Spartans. 

Kuskie takes top spot in Dayton, as Lowry cross country returns to action

The last time the Lowry High School cross country was in a competitive race, was the 2019 3A state championships in Reno at Rancho San Rafael Park. After seeing its usual fall season postponed due to Covid-19 concerns, the Buckaroos were back in action in Dayton on Tuesday, March 2, to begin their shortened six-week season.

Lady Bucks volleyball team drop matches to Spring Creek, Fernley

The Lowry High School volleyball team hit the floor for the first time in this shortened six-week schedule with a pair of matches. Lowry hosted Spring Creek on a late Friday night, as the Lady Bucks honored their seven seniors on senior night. The Spartans played spoiler, winning 25-18, 25-19 and 26-24.

High school girls golf in Nevada brings to mind nice August weather conditions with an abundance of green grass and warm temperatures. That would be in a normal year. 

Lowry hangs on to beat Elko in Northern 3A East opener

When the Lowry High School football team hosted rival Elko on Saturday afternoon, the biggest unknown was how the play on the field would be. After a 15-month layoff, the two rivals put on a good show for the small crowd as Lowry held off Elko in the final minutes for a 29-22 victory. “It has been some time since we have seen some real football,” said LHS coach Taua Cabatbat. “Our kids are excited to be out here. We are taking every opportunity to get better and taking the opportunity to just be out here and play. We didn’t know if we would be able to play. This is not only for the seniors but for the future of the program.”

Tickets for 2021 Reno now on sale

 The “Wildest, Richest Rodeo in the West” is set to return to Reno June 17–26, 2021 pending COVID-19 restrictions and tickets are now on sale. “After an incredibly difficult year we are optimistic that we will be able to bring ‘the toughest sport on dirt’ back to the Biggest Little City and are grateful for the support from our rodeo family and community,” said George Combs, general manager of the Reno Rodeo. “While this year’s rodeo may look a little different, we know it will still deliver the exhilarating experience the Reno Rodeo is known for.”

Garijo, DeLong win events at Pahrump High School rodeo

The Nevada High School Rodeo Association started up its spring portion of the schedule on Feb. 20-21 in Pahrump. A pair of Humboldt County Rodeo Club members claimed average wins over the weekend. Emma Garijo was first in the pole bending average with a combined time of 41.996 seconds. She was second in the first go-around at 20.891 and she won the second go-around with a time of 21.105.
