Lowry girls golf team finishes first, second in opening tournaments of the season

After a nearly month of practice, the Lowry High School girls golf team hit the course to see other golfers for the first time, with two tournaments in Elko County last weekend. The Northern 3A began its season on Tuesday, Sept. 7, in Spring Creek and with three freshmen in the line-up, the Lady Bucks won the tournament. Lowry shot 434 to beat Douglas by two strokes. Douglas, a member of the Northern 5A in most sports, saw its girls golf team drop to the 3A under the latest NIAA realignment that last for two years.

Buckaroo boys drop matches to Wolverines, Huskies

The Lowry High School boys soccer team was back home this past weekend for a pair of matches against squads from the Northern 3A West. Lowry took on perennial Northern 3A power Truckee on Friday afternoon and suffered a 5-1 loss to the Wolverines.

Strong’s 4 TD passes helps Nevada beat Idaho State 49-10

Carson Strong threw for 381 yards and four touchdowns, and Nevada beat Idaho State 49-10 on Saturday night. Strong completed 34 of 43 passes that included two touchdowns to Elijah Cooks, who finished with seven receptions for 89 yards. 

Gibbs stable asserting itself two races into Cup playoffs

Two races into the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs, regular-season champion Kyle Larson is still the points leader, but the stable of contenders at Joe Gibbs Racing is making the most noise with victories in the last two races. Martin Truex Jr. led a 1-2-3 parade of JGR Toyotas to the checkered flag on Saturday night at Richmond Raceway, and it wasn’t just at the finish line where they dominated. Not much past the race’s midpoint, they were running 1-2-3-4. The return to winning ways is perfectly timed.

Daniels runs for 122 yards, No. 23 Arizona St shakes UNLV

Arizona State’s first half was a stinker and the second half was stellar. In the aftermath of a surprisingly competitive 37-10 victory over UNLV on Saturday night, the 23rd-ranked Sun Devils chose to focus on the latter. “Eventually, our guys came together,” Arizona State coach Herm Edwards said. “In the third quarter, that’s when we got going.” Quarterback Jayden Daniels ran for a career-high 122 yards and Rachaad White added two rushing touchdowns. Arizona State’s defense held UNLV to just 19 total yards in the second half and the Sun Devils were dominant with a 23-0 advantage after the break.

Oregon, Iowa enter top 5; Arkansas has 1st ranking since '16

Oregon and Iowa were the big movers in The Associated Press college football poll after road wins over top-10 opponents. The Ducks’ victory over Ohio State earned them a promotion from No. 12 to No. 4. Another impressive defensive performance by Iowa in the Cy-Hawk Trophy game pushed the Hawkeyes from No. 10 to No. 5. Arkansas, coming off 

Tailgating, face-painted fans back in force at NFL stadiums

Tailgating, face-painted fans returned in full force at stadiums around the country as the NFL opened its doors to capacity for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic. Some wore masks, some didn’t. Some are vaccinated, some aren’t. Restrictions varied in different cities with the Seattle Seahawks, Las Vegas Raiders and New Orleans Saints the only teams requiring fans to provide proof of vaccination to enter.

Lowry improves to 3-0 with 42-26 victory over Wooster

No, it wasn’t Friday the 13th and no there was no full moon, but it was wild night this past Friday as the Lowry High School football team hosted Wooster in a Northern 3A match-up. The teams combined for 25 points in the first five minutes of the contest and unsportsmanlike conduct penalties were plentiful throughout the night, as Lowry pulled away for a 42-26 win over Wooster to improve to 3-0 on the season.

Buckaroos drop home-opener to Tigers

A short-handed Lowry High School boys soccer team found themselves unexpectedly hosting a match this weekend.  The Buckaroos were scheduled to travel to Minden and Douglas High School on Saturday, but due the Caldor Fire, the match was moved to Winnemucca. 

Nevada High School Rodeo Association starts new year

Even though the National High School Finals Rodeo ended at the end of July, a new season for the Nevada High School Rodeo Association got underway in Panaca in Lincoln County in the final weekend of August. Billy DeLong and Cooper Hill led the Humboldt County Rodeo Club with a third and fourth-place finish in boys cutting.  DeLong was second in the first performance and third in the second to score 137 points. Hill scored 61 points in both performances to finish with 122 points. Hill added a fifth-place finish in the rifle shoot.

Winnemucca Ladies Golf Club results

Gail Piquet scored 71 points to win the first flight of the Winnemucca Ladies Golf Club Tin Whistle tournament held Tuesday, Aug. 31, at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course.

Lowry volleyball team knocked off by Truckee in home opener

With a condensed schedule this past spring, the Lowry High School volleyball team didn’t face any opponent from the Northern 3A West.  Now, that the schedule is back to normal, the Lady Buckaroos opened their home schedule last Wednesday against perennial power Truckee. Lowry gave Truckee first for most of the night, only to see the Wolverines come out on top 25-16, 24-26, 25-12 and 25-21. Truckee jumped out to a quick start, scoring eight of the first 11 points of the first set. 

Pershing County volleyball team drops crossover game in Fernley

Flexibility is the name of the game when it comes to high school sports, especially these days.  Last Friday the Mustangs traveled to Fernley for their first full match of the 2021-22 season.  Unfortunately, they were minus Kaylen Halverson due to an illness.
