Lady Bucks pick up three wins in Las Vegas

After missing out on last season due to the Covid pandemic and the way the schedule worked out this year, the Lowry High School girls basketball team was one of the last squads to get on the floor in the state of Nevada. The Lady Bucks made their way to Las Vegas this past weekend for the three-day Liberty Crown Classic and finished second in the tournament with a 3-2 record. 

McDermitt/Pyramid Lake basketball games postponed

The scheduled home-opener for the McDermitt boys and girls basketball teams on Tuesday, Dec. 14, against Pyramid Lake were postponed. The games will be rescheduled for January 2022.

Lowry wrestlers finish third at Cody Louk Invitational

After a year’s absence, the Winnemucca Event Center was full again, as the Lowry High School wrestling team hosted the annual Cody Louk Invitational with over 20 teams in attendance.

DeLong wins pair of events, Garijo, Holman win at Moapa rodeo

The Nevada High School Rodeo Association closed out its fall portion of the schedule in Overton at the Moapa rodeo from Nov. 20-21.  Once again, area competitors had an excellent weekend. Humboldt County’s Billy DeLong won a pair of events, including boys cutting with an average of 144 points.  DeLong won both performances of the event, scoring 72 points in each round. DeLong took home the top spot in saddle bronc, winning both performances as well. He scored 64 points in the first performance and 72 in the second. 

Lowry boys knock off Reno at Elko tournament in first games since February 2020

After seeing the 2020-21 season canceled due the Covid pandemic, Lowry High School boys basketball coach Chad Peters came into this season not knowing what to expect as his team took to the floor for the first time in over 650 days. No one on the current team has any varsity playing experience. Cal Peters moved up and practiced but did not play in a game with the 2019-20 squad that went 18-8 overall and third in the Northern 3A. 

Lowry wrestlers start 5-0 at Earl Wilkins tournament in Fallon

There were more than basketball’s hitting the floor this weekend, as mats got rolled out for the first time since February 2020 at the NIAA State Championships in Mesquite. After a long layoff, the Lowry High School wrestling team was back in action this past Saturday at the Earl Wilkins tournament in Fallon.  The Buckaroos went 5-0 in their dual matches to be perfect on the day. Lowry took a total of 24 wrestlers to Fallon, as teams from all over the area were on hand to get the first action of season under way,

Wolf Pack bound for Quick Lane Bowl

The Nevada football team has accepted an invitation to play in the 2021 Quick Lane Bowl where they will meet Western Michigan out of the Mid-American Conference.

Roller hockey team gaining momentum with players

When you think of sports for youths to do, the first that comes to mind are football, basketball, soccer and baseball and softball. However, roller hockey is starting to gain more and more momentum in Winnemucca for youngsters to try out. A little over two years ago, Colby Corbitt started the Winnemucca Mustangs roller hockey team. At that time there were about a dozen or so players, but now that group has soared to about 40 players in just a short amount of time.

McDermitt boys drop three in return to the floor

While the girls were in eastern Nevada, the McDermitt High School boys basketball team was in Reno this past weekend for the 2021 Winter Invitational JV tournament at North Valleys High School. 

McDermitt girls open season with two wins at WREC Classic in Elko

The last time the McDermitt High School girls basketball team was on the floor for a game, five of its six players were still in junior high school. Junior Cayla Crutcher played on the Lady Bulldogs’ 2019-20 squad as a freshman.   The 2020-21 season then was canceled because of the Covid pandemic, as Nevada was one of two states in the nation not to play basketball a season ago.

High School basketball, wrestling get going this weekend

After seeing the 2020-21 high school basketball and wrestling season canceled because of the Covid pandemic, the athletes and coaches are back on the mat and floor and fans are eager to watch.

Wolf Pack wrap —

Nevada freshman Tierney Wolfgram completed her season at the 6K at the NCAA Cross Country National Championships. Wolfgram finished in 20:35.6, 117th out 255 athletes and the highest placement at nationals in Wolf Pack history. Wolfgram finished second at the Mountain Regional in Provo with her time of 20:20.4, becoming just the second Pack athlete in history to qualify for nationals. 

Kuskie Impresses at NAIA Championship

Bushnell University junior, Rebecca Kuskie passed more than 30 runners over the final 1000 meters on Friday, Nov. 19,  taking 113th place at the NAIA National Championship, hosted by the Cascade Collegiate Conference at Fort Vancouver.

Sister duo claims IMCA state championships

They are your typical sisters — they push each other’s buttons, they are competitive and will do anything to help each other out. Now, you can call them Nevada IMCA state champions. Marie Curtis and Kayla Curtis captured IMCA championships in the stock car and sport compact class respectively, for the 2021 season.
