Nevada football is set for the first ever Battle Born Showdown, sponsored by River City Logistics, on April 23 at 6 p.m. inside Mackay Stadium.
The Battle Mountain High School track and field team traveled Reno this past Friday for the North Valleys Relays. Nolan Chopp set a season best in the discus to place fifth with a toss of 117 feet, 10 inches. The senior placed eighth in the shot put with a season-best throw of 40-8.
The Lowry High School swim team traveled to Incline on Friday, April 1, for a dual with North Tahoe. The Lakers defeated the Buckaroo boys 105-55 and the North Tahoe girls won 160-27. Tea Bengoa and Tajia Taylor won individual events for the Lady Bucks. Bengoa was tops in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 2 minutes, 46.57 seconds. She placed fifth in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 34.43.
When the high school basketball season began last November, long-time Lowry High School boys basketball coach Chad Peters knew it was going to be his final one in nearly 20 years as head coach of the Buckaroos. After missing the 2020-21 season due to the Covid pandemic, basketball was back this school year but the coach did not want to make it about himself, as he took on a team with not a single player having varsity playing experience. Despite a rough start and some bumps in the road, the Buckaroos advanced to the Northern 3A Regional semifinals, before being eliminated by eventual state champion Elko.
The Nevada High School Rodeo Association made a stop in Spanish Springs on April 2-3. Humboldt County’s Billy DeLong, who is leading the all-around standings was the runner-up in the saddle bronc average. He tied for first in the opening performance and was second in the second performance with 65 points. Eyer Morrison of Wells won the saddle bronc with rides of 64 and 69.
The Lowry High School junior varsity softball and baseball teams hosted Elko on Saturday, April 9. Elko swept the doubleheaders from the Buckaroos. Lowry travels to Fernley this weekend.
After a couple week break off the course and some time to refine its game in practice, the Lowry High School boys golf team saw a considerable improvement in the last two tournaments. The Buckaroos were Reno and Sierra Sage Golf Course on Monday, March 28, and finished second. Lowry placed sixth in the first two tournaments in early March.
The Lowry High School swim team crossed over to California on Friday, March 25, to dual five teams. “We had some great individual swims, but unfortunately our small team size was a disadvantage with the larger teams,” said LHS coach McKenzie Rupp. The Buckaroo boys knocked off Incline 61-30, but lost 95-50 to North Tahoe, 173-45 to South Tahoe, 162-36 to Truckee and 95-63 to Fernley. In the victory over the Highlanders, Matthew Lizanetz won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2 minutes, 21.59 seconds. Lizanetz also won the 50-yard freestyle at 25.33.
The Winnemucca Junior High School seventh and eighth-grade wrestling team was in Lovelock on Saturday, March 26, for the Tah-Neva Championships. The Warrior eighth-graders won the team title with 178 points, beating out Churchill County at 147.50. Yerington (89), White Pine (69) and Fernley (64) rounded out the top five.
McKenzie Harrigan shot a low-net score of 26 to win the Winnemucca Ladies Golf Club eclectic tournament held Tuesday, March 29, at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course.
The Lowry High School track and field team was in Battle Mountain this past Friday for the Battle Mountain Invitational. Lowry senior Jovi Kuskie won the 400 meters, 800 meters, 1,600 meters and 3,200 meters. Fellow senior Tyler Morrison won the 400 meters, 800 meters and 1,600 meters. Iysis Arriola won the long jump and triple jump; Giovani Sapien won the high jump and Jesse Jeronimo won the shot put. Deven Gomez took the top spot in the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles.
The High Desert Youth Bowling League held its City championship tournament recently with over 30 bowlers. The league started just after Labor Day and be on the outlook for summer league’s for the youngsters.
The Nevada High School Rodeo Association was back in action with rodeos in Las Vegas (March 11-13) and back in northern Nevada in Fernley (March 18-20). In Las Vegas, Humboldt County’s Emma Garijo was second in the barrel racing wo-day average with a time of 33.621. She was second in the first performance in a time of 16.740 and third in the second performance at 16.881.
After reeling off eight impressive wins in a row, the Lowry High School softball team was handed a one-run loss in extra innings to open Northern 3A East play in Elko this past weekend. The Indians grabbed a 4-0 lead on Friday afternoon, when the Lady Bucks rallied for four runs in the seventh. Elko went on to the 5-4 win, scoring in the bottom of the eighth.
The Lowry High School began Northern 3A East play on a high, winning two of three games from Elko this past weekend on the Indians’ home field. The Buckaroos won the opener 10-5 on Friday afternoon and split a doubleheader on Saturday, losing game one 12-6 and winning the finale 7-3. The Buckaroos improved to 5-8 overall and 2-1 in the Northern 3A East.
